My first mig welder was a clark EN90 I think ...... it was a gas less unit, very good, worked brilliant but not much use for every day welding :)

Yup, I have a 90amp Clarke one, use it with gas. It's very good as a starter unit, can be run off any domestic power suply and is easily man enough for bodywork thickness metal.

Also, Clarke wire feeders are good, unlike most budget ones.

the 90 amp is good as it goes down to 25 amps the lowest in the range and perfect to bodywork, stay away from gassless though its s***

I had a lot of success with my gasless..... don't diss the gasless :) the main benefits to me where that all of my welding had to be done outside, and the gasless flux doesn't blow away so easily :shifty: I had hired a gas type mig welder it cost a fortune in gas

I now use Argoshield 5% with a Murex Mig welder and its good for what i do :)

gasless is not good for sheet metal and the splatter is quite high so its not an option as far as i am concerned

for good welder advice try searching http://www.mig-weldi...forum/index.php
I dont see renting a bottle of argoshield for a year against the overpriced flux mig wire an issue not with the quality of gasless anyway
murex is rebranded ESAB good welders to

In those days I had the little bottles from Halfords etc.... way way to expensive :) ....... you are right a years rent for a bottle + delivery + gas is much better than gasless, however from an enthusiasts point of view gasless has a few advantages.... if you have wire then it should work :) if they are only using it to weld up the MOT each year then a years rent is expensive  as are two dozen of those little bottles :shifty: also due to the slightly larger wire size (flux cored) it tends to reduce your liner wear rate to a manageable level :)

My personal choice is a good quality welder and a 5% argon CO2 mixture in a decent size bottle :)

i have one of these!!
its doing the job for my restoration, the settings can be a bit awkward to get right tho but all in all a good welder imo.
