I was told to count the number of teeth on the large cog and then count the number on the small cog and then divide the two numbers and that tells you the ratio, hope this is correct im sure if im wrong i will be corrected

Thats what I thought as well only thing is the diff is still in the gearbox and I was hoping I could just leave the diff in when I fit the engine to our elf.

The diff on the 1100 had a much higher ratio than those usually used in the mini, because the 1100 was a much heavier car with larger diameter wheels. If you fit this in an Elf, the acceleration will be very rapid but the top speed will be significantly lower than normal. The speedo readings will also be very inaccurate. I think the ratio of the 1100 was around 4.3 to 1. I have one at work and could count the teeth on Monday, but I wouldn't recommend fitting the 1100 diff for mormal road use.
The diff can be changed by removing the diff housing from the back of the gearbox and the end cover behind the lower rad mounting to give access to the pinion. Also remember to change the speedo drive gears in the end cover.

According to these two sites, it is 4.13:1

The tires are 5.50 x 12, hence a lower final drive ratio than a 10 inch tired Mini

Yes, it was a 4.1:1 ratio.
You might find someone building a competiton car who would love that crownwheel and pinion. How much do you want for it when it's out and assuming it's all OK?

The diff is fine the wolseley the motor came from was a driver before I removed the motor, The guy I bought the car from had the motor converted to unleaded and rebuilt with new clutch etc, but he had a stroke so the car got laid up in his shed for 8 years, as for cost you can have the diff for nothing I could remove the crown wheel and pinion and just send them to cut cost on shipping :(
