Hi everyone

I'm going for a 9 week tour of Europe in two weeks time and need to sort out some type of breakdown cover
I have looked around and have found 2 main problems.
1) The majority of companies will only cover for a maximum of 14 days
2) The majority of companies will not cover anything over 15 years old.

Obviously I am breaking both of those rules as I will be gone for 65 days and my car is too old at 21! :(

Some companies will cover me, the cheapest so far is the AA at £166 which seems a lot to me (I was hoping to pay closer to £100 or less)

Does anyone know of any company which will A) cover me and B) be a bit more reasonably priced?

Any help/advice appreciated :D

Look into taking out a years Euro cover rather than cover for a specific period. Be sure to check the small-print if there is a clause relating to maximum duration of the stay witout a return to Uk though.

£160 isnt that much really. A breakdown on a French autoroute will cost you over €100 just to be towed to the next exit, never mind to a garage.

Also, watch out for the repatriation details. If the car cant be repaired, most policies will pay for the car to be returned to UK. - They will only do this if the costs of repatriation are less than market value of the car. Bear in mind that book figures for most older cars are generally only a few hundred quid, you might find this service is refused, should you need it.

Thats interesting, Iv never heard of repatriation details! The vehicle is probably worth around £2000 (its a campervan) so hopefully we would be ok.

Its so complex, kind of wishing I bought a newer vehicle now!

the problem is, unless you have an agreed value of 2000 with your insurance, they will give you bottom book price, which for a mini, is about 200 quid or there abouts

Luckily its not a mini which I need cover for, its a Honda campervan. I think a mini would be too small and not reliable enough for the planned trip! No idea what they would price the honda at though, it would certainly cost at least £1500 to replace..

You could try "more than" you can sign up on line and payments are monthly with no deposit.

My 1275 cooper is for everything and its something like £6 per month!

Just looked at their site, looking at the small print they won't cover anything over 15 years old or motorcaravans
This is only for europe, im sure they would be fine for the UK, but unfortunately not suitable for me.

These people seem to be able to cover me  It works out at £162.87 (always puzzles me how they come up with the 87p!) so only a bit cheaper than the AA BUT it gives me the option to pay monthly @ £14.66 p/month.

Having read the small print it also seems you can cancel at anytime for £35, so I could pay two lots of £14 then cancel when im back and the total cost would only work out at about £70! Much better!

Hello.

I get free uk and eu breakdown recovery with my classic car insurance on my 1953 landrover. Insurance is only £100.20 for the year.

give footman james a call and find out if they will insure you as cheaply as they do me. im 30 tho but try it.

Me again. I forgot to say in my first post that another alternative is the German breakdown service ADAC. They do Europe-wide cover, including uk for under £50. any car, any driver, I believe. I dont know if campers cost more.
I havent looked into it yet myself, but have heard very good things about them. It takes a few days to set up, but the website and call centres communicate in good english if needed.

Have a look here....

and their website is www.adac.de . Its written in Ze German, which I cant read for *melon*, but google will translate for you.
