Hi All
Got myself a nice little engine and 'box for 'The '72' (see sig), but the engine is a later A+ Mini engine, from a Sprite I think, running a rod change gearbox but 'The '72' has the remote change floor pan because it's a genuine 1972 not a 'reshell'
Are there conversion kits available or is it a case of cutting the floor pan centre and replacing it with a rod change piece, which I happen to have but is a lot of work!
Thanks in advance
Dan

This is purely hearsay from me as I have not made the conversion you are asking about.

The '72 probably has the rounded tunnel in the floor where the later cars with rod change had the more squared off tunnel. To fit the rod change to the '72 you will need the rear hanger bracket adapter kit. I know Mini Mania has sells this, I don't know who in the U.K. does. (MM part number 22G2026MM).

The remote shift originally in the '72 would have used the shift housing as part of the engine steady setup. When fitting the rod change you will need to fit additional engine steadies to handle this.

Why not fit a remote change box? Gives much, much better engine stability than a rod change and, some would say, a better gearchange.

Ok, thanks. Yes, will be fitting an extra upper and lower engine steady so this will not be an issue.

I have driven a couple of Minis with remote change boxes and to be honest absolutely hate it. Also the engine I have has the casing for a rod-change.

I do have the floor pan piece from a later car, so may look into cutting out the old and welding in a new piece. I would like to avoid this, so am looking for any kit or conversion method there is.
Surely someone must have done this before?

Thanks for the everyone

I bought mine already converted, dont think its done right as my remotes got a hell of a lot of movement from left to right! I would try and get this done right otherwise its a pain in the arse!

Remote or rod? I believe Dan was asking about fitting a rod change box to a car with the floor pan designed for the remote.

As for hating the remote shift? Why? The remote shift isn't bad and the lever is in a similar location to the rod shift. Are you thinking of the magic wand shift or the remote?

You can fabricate some brackets to hold the rod change in place. Many people have done this, as said Mini Mania do a kit with a bracket, if you take a look at the bracket you will have an idea of the fabrication needed to make a bracket to hold it in.

ok if i remember from my old mk2 you drill one hole in the tunnel for the left hand rubber for the rod change, then on the right hand(drivers side) i ended up using the little metal spacer from the block for the engine steady on a mk1 and bolted that to the floor and linkage and never ever had an issue

Ok cheers guys and gals!

And, they were definately remote change. I found them very stiff but sloppy, I just really disliked it compared to my orange Mini that has rod change. And I couldn't get either of them into reverse! >_<!
Plus the gearbox on the engine is rod change, so I'd rather keep the engine as is and fabricate a bracket. I'll give it a go from the pictures on Mini Mania.

When I changed Poo over from solid remote I just bent an re-hashed the existing bracket on the rod change remote.

A couple of rubber mounting bobbins from halfrauds and jobs a good-un.

NOTE!!

When you fit the new remote it has to offset to one side to clear the exhaust!!

(don't ask me how I know this!!)

This is the solution i need... i have a 1275 GT shell with remote floor, but not the Original engine for it. so im planning to make an A series 1293CC with a good working Rod gearbox. i have 2 remote gearboxes, but i miss some critical parts for the remote unit.

if anyone have pics about this conversion...

friendly regards, Frederik.

Frederik,

If you have a 1275GT with the 'remote' floorpan this will most likely be an early car, which are worth keeping original.

Before chopping the floorpan, what crucial bits are you missing for the remote?

i wouldnt chop it Carbon, if i really dont find them, i could use the special bracket and not destroying to remote floorpan.

A and B i have, all the rest is missing.
