Hi Guys,
As the title says really.. can anyone help me out with this one?
Dealing with a pretty serious oil leak from the drivers side pot joint, it has a lot of radial play...If I push it hard upwards I can literally get oil seeping out from the clearance that opens up in the seal...Probably moves ~3mm radially, although I haven't measured it...feels rattly and very very wrong.
This engine/gearbox is a completely unknown quantity to me, but I assume this movement isn't in the spline...so I guess either the preload has somehow come off the diff output bearing or the planets are worn and something needs reshimming/replacing? to be honest I haven't ever been in a mini diff so I'm not sure what to expect!
Essentially, how much play is acceptable in your experience? Do I need to just change the seal or is there shimming/diff component replacement to be done, and have you done this in the car?!
Thanks!
Al

There's a bronze bush in the end cover that the shaft of the pot joint runs in, with a bit of luck it's just that.

Correct, but after fitting they will need to be reamed...
Maybe worth you contacting MRA minis who can supply reconditioned diff covers

Thanks, the reaming makes sense.
I assume they are reamed off the car? Don't suppose in your infinite gearbox wisdom you have a reaming drawing do you?? any data regarding the hole size, location dimensions, tolerances etc and associated datums?
Thanks for the link, I haven't priced up any other way, but £100 for this engine is OTT...that's as much as it cost! It is purely to get me by until I decide what I actually want in there...If I fit the bushes and take it to my local tame machine shop, that'd be much more my kinda money...I think!
Thanks again

Yes could do it alot cheaper if I had some info on the machining...I'd really appreciate this if anyone has it, need to see whether the rest of this engine is junk as well!
Is it just reamed co-axial with the bore the bush is pressed into?? (i.e. push old bush out, set-up on mill bed, fit new bush, ream...)
Cheers!

Just remembered I've got spares of these side covers sat about from whence I melted a 998!
I don't have an inside mic so a vernier will have to do...took 6 dims across the bush avg 31.78mm Diameter...range 20microns...I assume this was reamed at 1.25" and is worn? any idea at what size they need replacing anyone???
Anyway I'll try these and see what the pot joints make of them...
fanx

when i do them i aim for 0.001" bigger than the pot joints 'shaft'.
