I've added some wider wheels to my mini the other day, and noticed that they come out from beneath the arches by about 3/4". I know it is illegal to have the tyre sticking out beyond the arch, but i have read other people's comments on here how they are acceptable in an mot if only out by a small amount? Even if it is just about legal, is it worth the hassle and would police notice and pick the car up on it? New arches may be next on the shopping list..

Hard to tell from the pics, but I was under the impression that if you stand next to the wheel and look straight down at it any tread visible past the edge of the arch would be an MOT failure.

Yeah i thought it might be.. Can anyone recommend some nice arches that don't need to be blended into the body but will also sufficiently cover my 10" alloys with 165/70 tyres? I really don't like the look where there is a large gap between top of wheel and arch and i want to avoid lowering the car at this moment in time. Cheers, Mike

group 2 arches will cover them.
What size of alloys you running exactly?

They're 6x10 Gemini alloys, but I forgot to mention that there are also spacers pushing the wheels out, but the spacers may go...

W&P arches will be fine. If you find them a bit picey you can get either group2 or group 5 arches, the last one will cover your wheels a lot more.
Why you need to remove spacers at the back? You can have rubbing issues without them, wide wheels tend to rub on radius arms and dampers.

It's not an MOT failure, when i got my car i took it to a MOT station to have it checked (ask their advise) and they said it wont fail an MOT for it as they dont look at that, but it is none the less illegal and the police will care if they spot it.
Mine stick out about as much as yours, maybe slightly less. when i was going down the motorway i passed a landy that had wheels sticking out by about 2 inches, so i decided if he doesnt have problems i should be alright.

thisd is big grey area and subjective.
what the MOT looks for and what the police base their decisons on are 2 different things. for the MOT you are OK. the police may take issue but i think they would only pull you over if you are driving like a tit or have a chav big bore drainpipe exhaust that gives them a obvious excuse to pull you. then they will go over the car looking for anything to do you for.
the legalities of this situation have been discussed to death over on the Retro Rides forums so have a look over there (search for stretch and poke....).
IIRC you are ok if looking at the wheel/tyre from above you can see less than 1/4 of the tread sticking out from the arch at the top of the tyre

My car is running 13x7s with sportspack arches, with a Metro Turbo brake setup which moves the wheel out by approx half an inch, which isnt covered by the arch (you can see a small amount of tread if you look straight down). The car has passed several mots with the wheels poking out slightly, so to be honest with you i think that will be fine.
