Hi just looking for some general opinion, I am going to be ordering one of MED's Type R 1380's.

I know they use cams from the Piper range and I don't have much knowledge of their characteristics.

The car will be used for going around shows/classic runs but will also be using for the occasional sprint and hillclimb for fun not trophies (just don't want to look to slow).

The engine will run with a Stage 4 Brian Slark head and a 45 Weber, reading the spec sheets on Pipers site i am leaning towards the 285 which is fairly similar to Kent's 286 which I have used in the past.

Just wondering how lumpy at tick over is it likely to be and does it give an engine that is driveable and also has a bit of get up and go.

Its horses for courses unfortunately, someones lumpy is someone elses racey if you know what i mean

If you have used a 286 before, what bore engine was it in? if it was a 1275/1293 or something standard, it will be more driveable in a 1380.

There is also the option of using a crank fired mappable ignition (megajolt or equiv.) meaning you can tailor your ignition curve to help cope with the lumpy idle. These also give you a few extra ponies and better fuel economy.

as for the piper range, im sorry i cant help, iv never driven one. There are a brazzilian threads about cam choices, i wouldnt be surprised if you found some info on pipers using the search... from memory, iv heard good things about the morspeed ph3, the sw5 and sw10 and the kent 286 and 296 and their scatter counterparts.

285's a pretty old design of cam, not a patch on the 286. Talk to Steve when you order the engine, if you not too bothered about road manners and run a suitable Low ratio final drive the AGSP is fantastic with a good head & 45. But don't expect much below 3500rpms, unless as above you go with a mappable ignition system.
