What colour are the OEM 998 engines? mine is yellow, both block and head, neither seem like they have been apart. I don't know what the normal colour they were sprayed in the factory?

Yellow its a factory colour for the later Austin/Rover 998cc engines. 1275 were red.

Well its cool to see that its the correct engine for the car then lol means its only done 76k miles :D still wierd about the porting and the modded carb/carb setup though

Awesome, I will go with an AAA needle then :D....then fit the 1275 and the weber carbs lol

Yes and paint engine in red, that will give you extra 20bhp..LOL

I would hazard a guess AAV is a misprint, I brought my stage one from Somerfords, my sister brought hers from minispares both came with an AAU

My sisters ran fine no problems with the AAU , mine worked a lot better with an AAA.

Of course, its a bit like my mini city go faster stripes down the side, adds an extra 3bhp - adding 10% to the engine power :D

ah ok, I will get a AAA, how much more mods can a AAA needle take if I changed anything else like a ported head?

The only advise i can give you is that AAA is a rich needle and its fine for improved induction systems like a K&N cone or a drilled air box with K&N filter. If you have just the standard airbox casing with a performace filter inside, in this case u need a AAU needle otherwise AAA could be too rich causing overfuelling.

Its running a K and N filter and a drilled airbox, might change it to a K and N or run a ramstack and a sock

Where u buy the kit, they didnt provide you an AAU needle?
I think AAA would be fine, at least a needle costs about 4 or 5 quid buy both and have fun..

It wasn't an off the shelf kit, most of my mates have minis -ranging from a fairly standard 998 to a 1480cc race engine in a midas kit car running meths and nitrous, my big bore RC40 system came off 1 mate, the stainless steel maniflow manifold came off someone else and the drop in filter came off the magical bay of E :D

Is it worth getting one of those minispares inlet manifolds? I might buy a few other bits if I am buying an AAA needle as well, I know 1.5 rockers don't work well on the 998 lol

yes - the alloy inlets are a good improvement over the standard cast type.

Should I go for an AAU needle, an AAA needle and an inlet manifold then?

I did have the OEM inlet and exhaust manifold (the 1 that has a clamp in the middle to connect the rest of the exhaust) the inlet part of the manifold was *ahem* removed using a hacksaw lol so I was just left with the inlet manifold it was running on originally :D this is my mate doing the work:

Just checked on minisport, it wasn't a typo, they are selling an AAV needle with their stage 1 kit and also an AAU needle as another needle they stock lol

oh dear :D

Fit this

http://www.minispare...ty=pb&pid=35083

Put a AAA needle in the carb, you should see a big difference. Obviously the mixture will still need setting.

Well I did have a nice shiny inlet manifold that I bought from minisport, but it only fits HIFF44 carbs :) *sigh* lol ah well, will be good if I upgrade the carb lol :D

so shall I go for that torquemaster inlet and AAA? or should I buy both AAU and AAA?
