[b]Model:Mini cooper
[b]Year:1991

Help ive just had a straight cut gearbox put in my mini and it crunches going into second gear when changing down or if you dont get the revs up to 3 before changing from 1st gear. I tried to get mini sport to take it back and replace it but the wouldnt and it took them 7 months to deliever it in the first place. i replaced second gear but its still crunching. I was told by a garage that it was a trate of straight cut gear boxes. anyone else heard this? anyone know what i can do to fix this probelm.

Is it a dog box?
What type of oil have you put in?
Replacing the gear itself is probably pointless, replacing the synchromesh (if it's not a dog box) could be the solution.

Depends on the type of gears used in the build and the quility of the baulkrings ( I assume it's a synchro box if it were a dog box you would have known, as it'd have cost you between 1500 and 2k )

Quite simply, the baulkring on 2nd is knackered, if it was a new build from Minisport then ring them up.

Don't know the circumstances of the purchase, but as the consumer you are in the best position as you have received faulty goods.

If it is a dog box, then you should still only get crunching into first from stationary and then only sometimes ......

However if you are managing to get it to crunch in only 2nd then I would suggest that you have the more common 4 synchro (standard for 1991) type box..... in which case as above there is a fault that needs rectifying, be it at your cost or that of the supplier is upto you to chase.

Incidentally did you buy it as a second hand unit, or a rebuilt or new build etc...... what exactly did you purchase ?

hey ya all.

Thank you for your help, yea its not a dog box, going to try and replace the sync soon and see if that works.
mini sport wernt interested when i rang them about the prob 3 times told me no gaurentee on a brand new straight cut gear box as its used for racing when they know from when i ordered it it was for a road carand built it to the spec of my car but then a again they wernt interested when they told me it would take 10 days to deliever and build and it took 7 months instead. think ill be sticking to mini spares from now on.

I second that. It's about time company took the responsibility and sorted their issues out....... I assume that you have the following information....

1) Order information date etc..
2) Payment details and invoice
3) delivery information.... courier can help you if you haven't got that one

This will give you a good indictaion of the service you recieved and also the next steps available to you.

Are you sure your clutch is clearing properly ?
Otherwise - it does sound like a faulty build - the straight cut box should change gear cleanly and without 'crunching' unless you are pulling it through ridiculously quickly!
