Model: City E
Year: '85
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible): i am troubled as to what needle i should be advised to purchase for the mini. the local garage (deals alot with a series engines) advised me that after installing a 3branch manifold, straight through to an rc 40 exhaust system and a k&N filter would need a new needle to suit. Curently the HS4 carb is using an AAU, and have been told that a 'richer' needle would help with the following problems i have been encountering;

dead spot when driving in low - mid revs

lack of power or a decrease as to what it used to have

I have recently installed all new electrical components that are changable, and have had the timing and fuel mixture set accordingly.

The engine will rev fairly well without too much of a struggle to climb revs when on the drive, but the problem is hightened when under load / driving. i have also found that holding the choke when driving eliminates the problem completely. i have had the mixture set between 3 - 6 % CO2 /CO to see if it helps but the problem persists.

If any a series petrol heads out there have any suggestions to what needle would suit a 998cc non a+ with a K&N with rc40 on a standard 998 HS carb plaase help shine some light onto my subject  . From what research i have gathered would a AAM needle be adaquite?

ERic

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?

Either AAM or AAA , both very similar profile.

Then set your CO at tickover to 2.5 - 3%

Just out of interest, you say 998 non A + ?? as it had an engine swap, 1985 should be A plus

I have tried looking for an AAA / AAM needle on minispares and had no luck,, the only needles with that code AAA / AAM are for the 'swinging' type and mine seems to be a fixed, but the current fitted needle thats in the carb atm reads AAU which is only available for the swinging type only :D is this just minispares being awkward or am i just my name? any help would be great!

Definitely - get the AAA - it's same type as your AAU, but quite a bit 'richer'. Burlen for SU parts. http://www.burlen.co.uk/
But AAA is just a starting point - although likely to be very close, you may be able to improve on it in time - but try that one first!

As if by magic:

As you can see, the AAA needle is slightly richer though the midrange and you can see the OEM ADE needle is useless for better gas flow lol

Nice little graph there m1tch! Do you have a template that allows easy comparison of different needles ?

I used the Minty SU needle compare-o-rama lol Perhaps I should save a graph showing ADE, AAU, AAM, AAA and AAV as these seem to be the most common needles for 'stage 1 kit'/aftermarket

I know this is an old topis but my Mini is the the same bar mine has a 12g295 head fitted. I am getting the same problems as described, the mini been flat underload/accelerating. Would an AAA needle be any good for me to try out.
