im still un sure and how could i tell whats in it now ? as i recently bught the car im still thinking the free oil i have at work would be best i think there some 20w/50 and 10w/40 but there wil be both unipart (cheap S**T) but i dont mind probly semi syinthetic but dont think that make much differance all im wondering is whats best for my old auto box. If it was manual id probly just put 10w/40 but as its a auto im clue less and ive had about same amount of people sayin use 10w/40 as ive had saying use 20w/50 so who am i ment to belive or should i just chance it ?????????????????????????

Use mineral oil only, avoid semisynthetic.
For your gearbox either 10w40 or 20w50 are fine, its your engine that, being 20 yrs old, needs 20w50.

ok im going with 20w/50 and if its semi syinthetic then ill get the 10w/40 because if i rmber rightly that wasnt semisyinthetic but if i can ill go with 20w/50

i mean i dont realy know what differance it will make any way to me its just oil ive herd of people using some of the weirdest stuff to lubricate there old engines so as long as it proper engine oil it should be ok i mean its not gona be catstrothic if i used wrong one.........................

Im no expert but though Boris had a handbook with him saying use 10w40 id never put that in him ;)
when we test drove him at the garage he was being sold at his oil was old and gloopy i think 20w50,the garage did as promised a flush and oil change but they followed their autodata and used 10w40 :D

The 10w40 they used was Synthetic ;D
They thought they were doing us a favour but to be honest it caused leaks and the gearbox to slip
We have since Changed to Duckhams Q 20w50 Mineral and he doesnt leak so much and doesnt slip as much and is quieter too ^_^

All i can say is dont ever put synthetic/semi synthetic in a Mini and certainly not in an Automatic Mini

regardless to what experts say i see it like this, boris may be a later injection mini but the engine and gearbox is more or less as it was launched and in those days they used 20w50 mineral so why change?

is there anything else you would recomend doing when im changing oil and filter. I cheaked air filter and its pritty new along with plugs + leads and the fan blelt all quite new i dont think it was long ago it had a service...... but im still gona change oil just to be sure if im ordering online do you think it would be a good idea to get a self taping sump plug just in case the other one is nakerd..............

Free oil sounds good - if it runs ok on 10W40 then use that - it will give more mpg. If it's losing oil/smoking/slipping - then 20W50 will help - a little. New filter is a MUST. The drain plug is very unlikely to be stripped - just be sure to turn it the right way when undoing it! If the engine is pinking - then the ignition needs to be v slightly RETARDED - NOT advanced. And Unleaded with NO additives will be fine - unless the car is being thrashed daily on Motorway work - in which case the only additive worth adding is Tetraboost - it's the only one that actually contains Lead TetraEthyl - and turns Unleaded into Leaded fuel. It must NOT of course be used on a car with a catalyst!

Yes - very slightly anticlock - but ONLY if you really do think it's pinking! Can you hear it ?

yes i think well it dident sound like that when we got it until we filled it up but it could be the carb housing ratteling or the metal flap thing on the air box but it definatly sounds differant to me and ma dad who has had mini in the past thinks it is ill get a nother opiniyon from the guy who had had drag racing minis across the road from me he builds drag racing engines so he should know hopefully thx for the help
