Model: Mini 1000
Year: 1979
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
Just curious if someone knows off the top of their head what the size of the carb would be on my mini 1000. it is a 1979 and I want to say it is a 1.5 HS2, it is a single carb with the float bowl on the side. I am trying to source out a cone air filter and I just want to make sure it would be a 1.5 in size.

Also, the motor is a rod shift box, question is, do I pump this bad boy full of grease or just pop out the shifter and grease the bulb at the bottom and the socket on the rod?

Thanks

Likely to be a 1.5" HS4 - but buy a filter for that anyway! Yes - grease the base of the gear lever.

Is the carb upright or at an angle, the option would be either a 1.25" HS2 (2/8" above an inch throat size) or a 1.5" HS4 (4/8" above an inch throat size) if your car has a centre speedo like mine, the pankcake style filter won't fit properly as the speedo cable gets in the way (found out the hard way) so you would need a tapers K and N style cone.

Never fill anything completely with grease, things need to be able to move. Just grease the ball, the eye and if you like the top of the spring loaded dome and inside of the cup. A little light oil on the spring would be an idea but isn't very important. Grease the rods a little where they pass through the bushes in the housing too, they will carry the grease into the bushes in use. Never go crazy with grease.

An HS2 is a 1.25" carb, not a 1.5". If it's a 1.5" it is an HS4. It should be an HS4, the HS2 was deleted around 1974 or so but you never know what previous owners have done.

Roger Thanks Dan.

It is a center speedo so that is why I am looking for the K&N Cone style filter.

Check out minisport or mini spares, you can get a drop in K and N filter that replaces the OEM filter (its what im running) and you can drill the airbox for better air flow, this apparently works better than a K and N cone filter as there is less heat soak.

You also need to get a 'stubstack' to bolt inside the K and N cone filter, else there will be a drop in BHP when if you only fit the K and N. The reason is due to the air flow being turbulent around the throat of the carb, which isn't good for the fueling, the stubstack inside the cone filter smooths out the air flow, allowing for proper atomisation of the air/fuel mix, ensureing that everything runs correctly. If you just bolt on a K and N cone filter, there will be a 90 degree sharp bend for the air to go around, which isn't good for airflow!

If you do change to an uprated air filter and have another mod like an exhaust you will need to change the carb needle and get it rolling roaded, for the best power gains
