Model: 1.3i Cooper
Year: '93

I replace my down pipe the other day, after fitting i was running the engine checking everything was done up tightly, no leaks, etc. I reved it a few times (it sounded different, rather nice!) and i noticed what looked like oil dripping out of the exhaust (tail pipe not any joints). If it was clear i wouldn't worry about it, just condensation... but this looks like and oily substance.

Could there be a problem with the piston rings or head gasket?

Cheers for any help.

I had a similar problem on my 1275 when my head gaskets kept going, i would end up with the rear of the car sort of sprayed (lightly) in oil.

This soon stopped after replacing the head and head gasket.

Hard to say what the problem is until you've identified what is dripping out. Condensation rarely drips out mini exhausts as it gets turned to steam - and if there is lots of condensation dripping out- it wont be clear as it it'll wash the carbon deposits out of the exhaust causing it to go black/brown.

Oil rarely gets into the exhaust for any other reasons other than worn piston rings or worn valve stem seals - in both cases it get's burnt off and exits in the form of blue smoke....

It could be from the exhaust itself: corrosion protection. If it's from the engine it can only really be from the exhaust valve stems or it would have been burnt.

Thanks a lot guys, I'll have a closer look and see if it's slippery... perhaps its just dirty condensation... the car had been sitting for a week while i was waiting to replace the downpipe.

I had a lot of rubbish come out my exhaust when I chucked some carb cleaner and it was running rich, perhaps it could be some condensation mixed with some carbon deposits?

Are you sure its oil and not black coloured water? Might be running too rich and the liquid could be fuel?

Paul.
