Given all the rule changes this year to eliminate aerodynamic aids from the bodywork in F1, and the debacle about the two stage diffusers, has anyone noticed what is holding up the wing mirrors on the Ferrari?

Sorry about all the spelling in the title, having laptop issues.

You mean the side wing thing, with a slit in it to aide airflow?

That's a bit odd isn't it? :)

How'd they get away with that?

It looks exactly, or very much indeed, like all the little winglets that the cars had on the sidepods last year and that have been deemed illegal. A lot of teams seem to have a small splitter or diffuser at the side pod inlet but the Ferarri affair has an aerofoil profile and is quite complex.

How'd they get away with that?

I don't know but when the designs were passed for this year their special contract was still in place with the FIA. It has now lapsed which is why they are now being a bit more vocal in regard to the political situation.

Motorsport is all about bending the rules - it's not just Ferrari who do it!

i believe there are strict rules surrounding this, however, there is a very small area of the car where bits like this are allowed. I think the FIA tried to stop this, and therefor made the area where bits like this are allowed further back than where ferrari had them last year. So basically Ferrari moved thier sidepods back a little to still allow the wingmirror struts to be in the area where they are allowed. Very clever, but totally legal . . .. i think the red bulls have something similar?

If that is the case, very clever.

There will always be small loopholes, and teams will always look for them so they have an advantage over the other teams. Like ouster said, that's what motorsport is about.

Look at my post again, and read it.

The Red Bull parts look flat and square, like everyone else's. The Ferarri one looks to be an aerofoil, at least that's what I thought I saw yesterday. Building the best car the rules allow is one thing but Ferarri have been allowed to build outside the rules so often in the past that it's easy to doubt their integrity. I'm not suggesting this is illegal at all, I just think it might explain why they've been so noisy in the courts this year. If everyone's looking at the back of the Brawn nobody is going to look at their mirrors.

Forget it then, I'm off. I think you must have me confused with someone else if you think I usually attack Ferarri. I always try to keep an open mind but there's a difference between being open minded and wearing red tinted sunglasses, as the FIA could do with remembering.

As I said, I'm off. I've had about enough. Maybe I'll e-Mail some of you from time to time. I'll see some of you at the 'ring.

O dear, Ferrari build outside the rules hahahahahaha i work in F1 you dont know the start of it, i think its wrong to automatically point a finger to Ferrari look deeper into F1 and the history of cheating i think you will prove yourself wrong dan.

As for F1 being a shambles, the FIA has gone in the wrong direction for F1 and its fans this will and is being addressed, a fantastic race today and congratulations to Red Bull Racing and Mark Webber for his firts GP win
