Oct Mini Mag has a pretty comprehensive guide to all things 'Stage 1, 2, 3' with parts recommended.

Correct...

Stage 2 normally comprises of a new cylinder head, and everything that is in a stage 1 kit

I had a fast road 998 a couple of years back and I loved it. I had a Kent 286cam with a 12G295 head(cooper). I opened up the chambers and fitted 1300 turbo valves to take it to roughly a stage 4 head. To get it to fit I had pockets machined in to the bores to prevent the valves from touching the block at 7500 rpm. Once it was fully ported it went like the clappers. It was a right hoot. If your on a budget then Id suggest fitting a good 1300 head. Nothing special but just with decently polished and matched chambers. Bare in mind you will need to pocket the block though.

Are you after a complete engine spec or just the head and cam?

For a fast road/touring engine, I'd build something like this;

998cc block Bored and honed to next size
Pocketed to accept a 12G940 cylinder head
Balanced and tuftrided crank
Balanced and shotpeened rods
Center main strap

12G940 Cylinder head
Ported and polished (Polishing not that important)
Chambers polished
1.3 Ratio Roller rockers

Depending on power output either a
HIF 44 Su carb or
Twin 1.25 inch SUs

Kent 276 cam or SW5 Swiftune cam
Venier timing chain (adjustable)
Aldon Yellow distributor

Id personally change to a non-verto clutch and flywheel so to have a range of upgrades but a verto should be fine for this spec

Stick to the original helical box with either a 3.44 diff or a 3.2 if motorways are to be used on a regular basis.

This lot shouldn't cost a fortune and I reckon would give a very nice lively car around town and when pushed on an open road would keep a smile on your face :teehee:

Id say around 70bhp. Depending on how far you modify the head and bottom end to cope with high revs anything up to 100 bhp is possible. This is what the Mini Severns are knocking out in there race seires.

There was an engine build in one of the Miniworld "Keep your mini alive" mags showing a decently tune 998 kicking out something between 80 to 90 bhp. Thats over a 100% increase.

i have been planning for a long while to fit a stage 1 kit to my car, but i have also seen a 998cc 12G295 become available that has been ported and polished, i just wondered if it is worth me buying and fitting it aswell as the stage 1 kit?

Would this give a performance increase over the stage 1 kit and my standard 998cc head and also would it then be classed as a stage 2 kit?

Thanks
Mike
