Mini City E Autob]
1989
Hi all,

Basically, ive found a good mini, just passed its MOT for a bargain price. But its got a 998cc Auto engine. If i were to buy it, i plan to switch the engine out with a 1275 manual, or at the very least a 998cc manual. What involved in switching from auto to manual? Is it reasonably straight forward? Is there space for the manual linkage etc? Ive done engine swaps before on a Ford Ka, Rover 200, MG ZR, but ive not done a manual to auto. This would really be the deciding factor on whether to buy this mini or not.

[b]Is there a link to somewhere that i could find more info on this, or a list of parts ill need?

Realistically, what sort of cost is involved in the conversion? Is it a matter of adding the clutch peddal and fitting the clutch cable, or do i have to remove all pedals and fit a new pedal box?

Im up near Edinburgh, infact, 7 miles west of where T in the park is going on just now.

From auto to manual involves adding:

Clutch master cylinder + slave + hoses (the mini has a hydraulic clutch, not cable)
New pedal box
2x Spacers for the subframe (readily available from minispares)
Rod change Gearshift mechanism (or remote...)
Starter inhibitor wires need joining together (although you could modify this into a little security switch)

think that's all but might have missed something off....

Not that expensive to do really -

Is the automatic engine broken?> or do you just prefer manuals?

Perhaps you can look out for a rotten MOT failure manual mini with a good engine and swap the engine, subframe, pedal box, gear selector rods etc over into your good car.

I have just bought an ex auto mini with an MG metro motor fitted, mine has spacers on the engine mounts as retro 10's mentioned above.
