I have a 998 mini checkmate (1990)

I have fitted a minispares RC40 exhaust. As I have retained the original cast manifold I bought the flanged downpipe also from minispares to mate this up.

I have been having problems getting the flanged connections to seal, so at my whits end I sent it to my local exhaust specialist. They have said that they cannot get it to seal properley either!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thinking now of changing the exhaust manifold to a LCB item??

On my OEM exhaust that flanged fixing was always leaking lol probably best to get an LCB anyhow as you will unlock some perfomance there :D you would need a new inlet manifold as the exhaust and the inlet are as one, or do what i did and carefully cut the inlet manifold off of the exhaust manifold lol

You tried some Holts firegum in the mean time?

Hmmm seems it might have to be the LCB. I had heard about the new inlet manifold - makes it a dear do!

Could try the firegum but to be honest I hate that stuff - rather get it sealed without if I could.

Technically you don't need to get a new inlet manifold, but you might as well lol check out ebay for some deals and also the classified section of this forum :D

Keep in mind that fitting an LCB manifold you need a quality one, like a maniflow small bore, otherwise connecting it will be painfull..
Even the inlet manifold will require a bit of trimming because lcb flanges have different thickness. Cooper freeflow usually fits 'bolt on'.

And to add top the above - The cooper freeflow is designed for small bore motors and will give you better performance results when fitted than the LCB (which isn't really suited to small bores at all)

LCB's are pesky - the cooper freeflow will fit straight on and doesn't have that terrible Y-piece to contend with or the seperate center branch.

I sealed mine by doing this;

1) Undo exhaust bracket on gearbox.
2) Wack jack under exhaust.
3) Jack up so the two flanges are together ... try not to bend the exhaust.
4) Take a load of exhaust goop (sealant) and put it around the flanges (put a glove on, stick gloop on hand then rub)
5) Put some inside the clip as well.
6) Bolt together and let it sit for a min, then do the gearbox clip up again.
7) Hope it works.

Thats what I did, seemed to work fine.

Cheers for the extra help guys.

Picked the car up today - exhaust still not sealed so just spoke to minispares and going to order the following;-

Maniflow cooper exhaust manifold C-STR816
Inlet manifold C-AHT770

£100 for the 2 but I am fed up with this now. Garage were great and didnt charge me for all the messing they did.

Mini failed its mot on exhaust plus nearside handbrake plus stearing rack gaitor.

Not bad as the car has been off road for 4 years!
