Hi! I brought a mpi about a year ago & at the time of taking it the seller said he couldn't find the v5 & said he would be in touch when he did!

I've kept asking but he says he can't find it!

Now I'm going to scrap the shell as its a bit to much for me to repair, but would like to buy a bmh shell in the near future & was thinking maybe i could apply for a new v5 & then put this on the new shell!!??

I know i need a form from the post office to get the copy but have i got the right idea about what i want to do??

Also i've got the vin plate off the shell, is there anything else i need??

Many thanks

Dodge

Just apply for the new V5, you're not currently registered as the keeper of the car.

If i remember correctly you need to keep all the major components of the car in order to retain the identity, subframes, running gear etc.. if you're re-shelling - it really does have to just be the shell you change - but there are lots of threads about this (including in the FAQ section) which should give you all the answers you need.

failing that - go online and check the DVLA site.

If the PO never sent off the v5 part for change of ownership then it still would be in their name, so as far as i'm aware, no you don't own it.

Major components would be the shell & the engine then

(removed for edit). You are the owner just not the registered keeper. Grey area to me, just going to check the DVLA website for ya

edit: I'll suck back slightly and slap my wrists for posting info before I double checked things, see this, just scroll down a page(ish) there's a downloadable form

Apologies, corrected myself (edited previous post). You are owner just not registered keeper, as said above just requires a V62 and £25.

only trouble if you scrap the shell they require the log book so they can fill it in to say scrapped. then you wont be able to use the details on your new shell. i would just cut it up into little pieces and scrap it so it does not look like a car. then you should get away with transferring all the details onto your new shell when your friend finds the v5.

Apply for v5 then your mate will get a letter saying someone has applied for a v5 for their car, your mate can either call up and let then know thats ok or not reply for 2 weeks then you should get v5 through in your name.

Start getting parking tickets - the old owner will find the V5 before you can say "thirty quid a pop".
