As the title says... before I go forcing a wrong sized bolt/screw in, what size do I need to attach the rear view mirror (to a Mk3)?

Cheers,
Colin.

The rear view mirror screw are 10/32" unf thread, they should be countersunk screw heads to locate in the mirror. Hope this helps
