Hi all,

Ive recently purchased a mini city e 998 '91. Id like to get 60bhp out of the engine, or a 0-60 time of 10 seconds out of the car. (60bhp according to power/weight ratios should gove an approx 0-60 time of 10 seconds)

Ive had a think about switching engines with a 1275, but if possible, i think id prefer to stick with the 998.

Could anyone tell me what is the cheapest way to get that sort of power. From what i understand, the 998 has approx 40 bhp standard, so this is really a big jump at about 50%, so im not expecting to spend pennys really. Although im alot more used to working on the K-series which really is expensive to do anything to.

What power figures are possible from the 998 in N/A form? This month's MiniWorld mag had a rolling road session featuring a 998 with 70.2 bhp at the fly which i think is the biggest power ive seen from that engine. The owner had fitted Pipercross Air Filters, Kawasaki GPZ1100 Throttle Bodies, Custom Inlet Manifold, 12G940 Head (cooper head i think?) Kent 276 Cam, Canems Mappable ECU, Mini Sport LCB Manifold, and an RC40 Exhaust System.

Many Thanks,

Nathan

Welcome in mate  might be an idea to search for 'stage 1 kit' this is the usual bolt on options to get the 998 breathing and running better :D

Check out minisport or minispares for a full kit, but you might be lucky and find parts of the kit in the classified section of this forum :teehee:

You might not get a 50% hike in power, but a 'stage 1 kit' will make the car more drivable, I have a better inlet, exhaust and air filters and it keeps up fine with modern traffic :withstupid:

Have a read of this:

Also, to get the most out of your car, its best to give it a good service  mainly igntion issues cause power loss, so new plugs, HT leads and such will help

Thanks for the info. I think the car itself is brilliant, but could really do with a bit more grunt. Dont want to be the smallest AND the slowest thing out there lol.

The good thing with minis is that they weigh nothing, so any increase in power is more noticeable, even if its just 5bhp more, you can feel the difference :)

Its probably best to have a look around this forum and ask questions like you are doing, don't forget that as its a carburetted car the mixture and the needle will need tweeking, so its best to go down to a rolling road to get it tuned up, it will make a big difference once you have fitted a kit.

Stay with the 998 for a while ;) its a good engine, loads of parts to bolt on, if you think of upgrading more, then think of twin HS4 carbs, or a Hiff38 carb work well.

How long have you had the car? what has been done to it so far? On mine I have put a drop in K and N filter - many are on ebay, and this just helps the car breath much better as a start, and you can clean it!

Its best to get the car cleaned up and maintained first before you get into any performance, get some carb cleaner and give everything a good going over, especially electrics. Also check all the coolant hoses on the right, I just had a bypass hose go on me, causing my car to overheat - don't forget its an old car so some rubber parts perish and split ;)

The mini is a good car to work on as its quite simple, get a haynes manual as well ;) I didn't think I was mechanially minded enough, but I have just changed the waterpump and radiator lol its a good car to learn stuff on  and parts are cheap

Enjoy!
