Yo gang. Me and Clairey been to cornwall from portsmouth last weekend, and noticed a fumes smell, quite strong, but only when the windows are down.
Things we know are:-
1. Shes just passed MOT 3 weeks ago so emissions at exhaust ok.
2. On the run to cornwall she did 46 mpg ish.
3. She got new air filter.
4. No blowing of exhaust.
5. Brand new braided fuel hose under the car from tank to fixed pipe on rear subframe. No fuel leaks.
6. Mags has a couple of oil leaks on the engine, mainly i think And hope from the timing cover gasket, this drips on the driveshaft and is therefore across most of the engine back.
Erm...cant think of anything else but shes in pretty good order.
My only guesses are the oil getting hot or perhaps dropping on the exhaust downpipe? Or the cylinder type thing that connects to a hose from the carb. I read this is called a charcoal filter or something...could this be the cause of any unwanted fumes around the car?
Mags is totally standard.
I'll be interested in your thought gang.
Cheers.

I have this problem and on long journeys i become very ill.
Does your boot seal well? fumes could be drawn through there into the boot.

on an 1982 will be carb so could either be the carb is leakin, or the oil is due for a change so the oil thats leaking is rich in petrol / detergents drips on the drive shafts gets flung at the exhuast and becomes FUMES

hope that helps.

I gotta say, she is due an oil change.
Not sure if theres a crankcase breather or where it is.
No, the boot is no where near air tight. Two speaker holes in the back shelf which i am yet to make slightly bigger to fit 6x9 speakers in. And the bootlid currently has no seal, cause we fitted a M reg bootlid to replace mags dented one, and the rubber fittings are different. So no bootlid seal to outside. and no seal between boot an cabin. Also open holes passenger side where i guess an extra fog lamp could be fitted.
Wise words gang, i'll look to rectify these things. and get back to you.
I took pickies of this cylinder thing i no not what it is tonight...but cant get em to upload. Ping me a PM with yo address and i'll send em ya.
Cheers groovers.

Huey has sliding windows and with the driver's front one open a couple of inches the fumes are bad. You have to have the rear one open as well. With both shut there's no problem so the fumes are coming from outside. But I can't work out how exactly.
Would it be something to do with drafting etc. If the windows are closed, the car is full of air and therefore not taking in more i.e.fumes? I'M JUST THINKING OUT LOUD NOT ADVICE!
I'm gonna block my couple of holes in the rear shell under the bumper, and also set about sealing the holes in the back shelf. See if that makes any difference.
Respek geezers.

Check all your seals, boot, door e.t.c,then check behind the fire wall for fumes entering the cabin.

Fitted a M reg bootlid to mags cause hers was dented, and the rubber fixings werent the same.
So still sourcing a new boot rubber for the M reg bootlid.
Have covered the parcel shelf holes, which helped, but still not 100% fume free. the wife is starting to get green hair whilst driving mags ha ha ha!!
I'm pretty confident its not coming through the front bulkhead, cause surely we'd smell fumes with the windows closed also....?
Mags is having a weekend of surgery this week, new head gasket, timing cover gasket, and windscreen out...i'll give her a good looking over RE this prob too.
Big respek gang. Ta.
