my speedometer began to bounce a few weeks ago and has by now dropped dead. i changed the cable, although that seemed to be ok. the same result. occasionally it works for a few miles and then when i brake it goes back to zero. i was testing a bit and found out that the internal cable goes well when i am going in reverse but does not move when i am going forward

the engine is from a 1275 metro a+ and i have the clubman dash

any ideas about this?

also is it normal for the internal cable to get hot/warm at the gearbox end?

I hate to be "Captain Obvious" on this ... but ...

Are you sure it is tight on the threads enough to have the squared key part able to lock into the back of the speedo? What about on the transmission side? Since these are a pain to run and attach when the car is in place you may just not have it tightened up enough to keep it connected? Can you hear and "slippage" of the cable in the back of the speedo?

on mine they just clip on at the back of the speedo. and on the gearbox side it is screwed on well.

what i found strange was that the gearbox end of the cable was not square but sort of oval (even in the new cable)

right now i am on vacation so am not trying to fix it really

The number 1 thing to make sure is the cable is seated far enough in to make sure you engage the inner pot.

Make sure the speedo is working first bu using a drill with a roberts head on it in the back of the speedo, counter clockwise, no need to go fast on it. Slow is enough to make sure it is working.

If that works, make sure your cable is making contact on the transmission side, push it down the cable tube and try to turn it by hand. If you can turn it when it is in the transmission, you have a broken cable.

the speedometer is fine as when i turn it by hand it marks.

what i did was drive with the cable attached on the gearbox side and loose on the other side. so i could feel the cable with my little finger while driving. the inner cable would sometimes work and others not.

will try to remove the drive on the gearbox end and make sure it is seated correctly. will it be ok if i drive with out it in place? also my father asked if the oil will come out, and i thought better to ask on here too

Ya I have a funny feeling that you will have some oil spillage if you drive with it out. I know mine for sure has an oil seal on the transmission side.

I hope mine will work when driving since I have yet to be able to take the car out for a drive. I may be in the same boat as you if mine doesn't work as well.

ok, found the problem. the plastic speedo drive was missing some teeth

i had another one, but it was 1 tooth more (or less) from the other. how much will it affect my speedometer? considering that over here if i go over 50mph i would be exceeding the speed limit

it will affect your speedo by 10mph as it will be spinning 10% slower or faster.

(i belive this is true but ask Gues works he is the guy in the know how)
