HI

I bought mini mayfair classic 1989 998cc

Its nice and clean, no rust, and only 60K mils,

its automatic, I never had mini before, maybe its normal in automtic minis

when I start the engine and is on N (neutral) is ok, but then I hold break and switch to D, RPMs go lower,
and pullin the car forwards, its normal? how this can b fixed? maybe I should change the oil in clutch?

thakns

simon

That is normal for an automatic. IT should not be pulling hard when in "D" but it will pull slightly. There is nothing wrong

p.s. and yes the RPM's will drop slightly when in gear

Hi Simon,

The "clutch" you talk about is actually a torque convertor.

Can you confirm that you are holding the brakes on ?

if you select any of the drive positions without the brakes it is usual for an auto to creep farward, with the brakes on it should stop quite easily.

If this is not what you are getting then list exactly what model and engine etc.... is it an SPI ? it could be something simple or fairly serious.

Regards Martin

I dont mean to cause offence, but it genuinely frightens me that you can be so ignorant about a car you have just bought.
What you have described is normal behavior for any car with a traditional auto box.

If you dont know how to drive an automatic, then I suggest you start learning before you do yourself or someone else an injury. Start by reading the owners manual.

This isn't a problem. If you have more choke it should pull even harder, you'll learn to use this on hill starts instead of handbrake.
The engine in the mini has the same oil flowing into the engine block and gearbox, So you need to check only 1 dipstick; should be blue and on the left on your car. Try to start in 'P', and with your foot firmly on the brake (almost to the floor) put the car into D or 1st, then slowly let off the brake and it will creep forward.
NEVER drop it into D without the brake pedal down, else you'll rear end the car infront.
The auto gearbox is also a bit loud when selecting gear but this also ISN'T a problem. (Oil changes sort this out normally)
Make sure you have the engine oil changed a few times a year for something decent. (Don't spend more then £25 or so though)
And you'll have to swap the paper cartridge thing in the filter housing at least once a year; this is a very easy but messy job as the way its mounted makes it drip everywhere.

Hope this helps.
Welcome to the mini scene.

I dont think this requires a post like this. If you cant help with the problem then dont say anything. How is anyone suposed to start learning about cars or Mini's for that matter if they dont ask questions? Im pretty sure you didnt wake up one morning and know all that you know about Mini's and im sure that you asked so "dumb" questions as well. I know i have and to some people probley still will ask some dumb questions. All in all that was a bit harsh for someone who is trying to keep another Mini out the scrap heap.

simoniz29: Ignore people like this unfortunatly they are out there. If i can be of any help just send me a message as i have an Auto and a Manuel Mini. Ill try and help if i can.

Wow chaps.........

It is dangerous to get behind the wheel of any machinery that you have not been familiarised on......... you may not realise that when you accelerate in D or any other position that the car could leap forward or rearward........ lets now assume it's your 3 year old walking behind the car that has just leapt rearward because someone decided to drive / operate with the correct knowledge .... would this change your mind about this post ????

It can happen and most certainly DOES happen and there is no excuse when it is too late to say oops I should have read the handbook. I don't think that dave21478 was being nasty or rude just plain straight to the point.

It's far too easy to say well you have to learn somewhere yes that is true and no assumption should be made that Simoniz29 is doing anything dangerous, my personal assumption here was that he was driving the car, however he may have seen someone else drive it and is simply asking the question......

But he has asked the question now so all should be ok, because I am sure that he now realises the handbook needs to be read to avoid any dangerous situations ... lesson learnt :)

Don't lets get all upset by it all when we should be learning from it :)

Regards Martin

As I said, I didnt wish to cause offence, but my point still stands. You have bought a car that is more than capable of causing serious injury or death to yourself or anyone unlucky enough to be nearby, and you are asking a question which would suggest you have absolutely no idea how an automatic works. AS A BARE MINIMUM, you need to familiarise yourself with how it works - ie read the owners manual, or have a quick look online for tips about driving an auto. You state you have driven autos before, but the simple truth is they all behave in the same way (unless its something like a variomatic transmission),so if your minis behaviour surprises you,I have to doubt your competance without proper instruction.

ohhh its you again!? I have idea how automatic works, is not that hard to understand how automatic works, I said i was driving automatic before, how can I injury someone, dont need to read a handbook about everythink, just think, try and learn,
no offence, but did you read a handbook how to wipe arse?

Hi Simon,

Personally I would think that your reply was unfounded, however you would have a greater credibility if you actually explained how an automatic works.... so that anyone reading this topic can also learn from it :P

Stop and read what you are writing. Your original post was about how you believed the car to be faulty, yet from your description, it is behaving as any auto should do. Your claims of knowing how to operate an auto car therefor seem a little hollow to me.
It is very easy to cause an accident by changing to a transmission type you are not accustomed to, especially if you dont know how it should behave.

look..im not gonna take sides here but dave has a point..the auto's will creep forward etc if in drive without the break on and if you don't know that then yes you could have caused an accident, and simply saying i didnt know it could do that is not the best of reasons, as i say im not taking sides here and if you said you werent familiar with auto's then fair enough but seing as you do it should be something you should already know about.

but please dont be offended when someone is making a statement about general safety with a machine that can kill you or others..if offense was ment he wouldnt sugest familiarising youself with auto's

To be fair though, it is difficult to get hold of an owner's handbook for any mini before rover.
