Hi!

I've been looking for good looking seats for a while and stumbeld across the Cobra 'Roadster 7'. They look pretty good, are smal and not 'chunky' and seem to offer good hold to the passenger/driver. And as a plus you can get them without those horrible harness slots in the headrest-area.

BUT - do they offer enough strengh in an 'open' 4 seater? They are specificaly designed for use in Caterhams, SuperSevens etc. where they can 'lean' on the bodaywork/frame which supports the back rest (look at the picture, you'll see what I'm about). So my fear is that the don't offer enough strengh and may collapse if the Mini gets rear-ended (for axample).

Can anyone confirm/denie? Cobra Seats don't awnser my mails :P

Cheers,
Jan

first of all i would like to tell you i don't know :P

but just thinking about it i would think they should be alright as obviously people of different heights would drive those cars so if somebody short was driving surely the seats would be further forward and therefore not resting on anything? so i cant see why they wouldnt work? and i doubt they would sell seats that would collapse in a collision, especially for a small car such as a caterham

Because they are 'tailor made' for Caterhams etc. only! See - in those car's you don't need to add extra reinforcements (weight) to prevent the back rest from going backwards because the car's frame does this job.

Completely different story in a Mini where the back rest ALONE needs to support the passengers weight in a emergency situation! And Caterham surely is smal enough to not fit large people :P

Cobra Seats: "A unique seat developed for 'Seven Style' vehicles where space is at a premium. Designed to maximise legroom by utilising the angle of the rear bulkhead, the Roadster Seven delivers incredible support BlahBlahBlah" & "Narrow fitting for ‘Lotus 7 Style’ replica vehicles only".

Do you mean like these???

I was intending on fitting these in mine but have decided they wern't retro enough for what I had planned. The was a guy with a mk2 aussie cooper with these fitted in one of the minimags about 12 months ago (red car very nice) and thats why I bought mine. They are pretty substantial so I wouldnt worry about the leaning against the bulkhead of Caterham type vehicles. I think it refers more to the angle of the back rest and as said above what if you had little legs you would need to slide the seat forward away from the buklhead.

Are they slidable at all in a 'Seven'? I think they are solid mounted to the floor (and pedals & steering adjusted to the driver)? But yes, those are the ones! :P

They have the same base fixings as Cobra classics so I cannot see how you could fit them without a subframe, and I doubt a vehicle manufacturer(even kit cars) would have fixed single seating positions. What if you set it up for yourself and then you let someone else drive (wife or a co-driver) it just wouldnt work.

I will take another look at the frame arrangement to see how the join between backrest and seat bolster is formed and hopefully reassure your doubts

caterhams have fixed seats. you have to adjust the pedal box if you can't reach it. but i would have thought those seats are pretty substantial as they have to take a lot of forces, and they dont quite touch the bulkhead in them, otherwise you end up with loads of annoying squeaking noises.

Caterhams might have adjustable pedal boxes, but do other Seven style kits such as locost, Robin Hoods?

You are essential right about the seats being pretty strong, also Cobra will have to build these things to relavant EU safety standards so I cannot see this being a real issue.

a customer has a locost that he brings in for mot, and thats fixed seat, and to adjust the pedal box you unbolt it, and move it along a stud hole or 2. i remember it well as i couldnt get in, he is quite a short guy.

Well blow me, I never new that, what an absolutley mental concept!.. Anyway suffice to say the seats come with bolt holes and captive bolts for fitting runners/subbies.
