Hi,
I have a 1994 Cooper SPI,
people keep telling me to fit catch tanks and breather filters,
Could anyone tell me .......what they are? ......What they do?......plus any pictures of where they go would be great!
Thanks,

My opinion is that neither are much use on a road car.
Both are an alternative to plumbing the crankcase breathers to the engine's induction system.

So basically they are filtering the air before it goes back into the engine?

No, normally the air would just be piped straight back to the inlet. If you vented the crankcase to atmosphere you could use a filter so that grot isn't drawn in to the crankcase if the flow reverses. a catch tank is just an open bottle that the pipes go in to to catch any oil that's blown out. There are fancy stainless steel ones about but cycle drinks bottles or even old oil tins are almost as functional.
