Well I am close to finishing off the first mini project and I am pre wiring for the stereo before she is finish. My question is, how much is enough for a good clean sound int he car?

I plan on putting 4" in the dash where the fresh air vents were, 6"x9"'s under the rear seats, but I am at a loss for how much bass I need. I know the car is a small enclosure area to fill, but I also know there is no real air transfer from the boot to the cab. Would a single 12 be enough, what about a pair of 10's? At what point will you reach a sound that is acceptable for SPL.

I am a big stereo guy and have had cars that have won competitions. I am looking for something that will sounds nice and still give me the "feeling" of music in the car.

subs + minis = :w00t: even less space and a fair bit of weight in a sub...

Depends on what type of music you listen to, and if you want out-and-out bass or a well balanced system.

6"x9"'s under the rear seats

I have never understood this. Big powerful speakers pointing underneath the front seats. My personal opinion is to fit some quality component speakers up front and a ten or possibly a twelve inch sub in the boot.

Yup, he's quite clearly a guy who hasn't won many competitions.

thats up to the owner of the vehicle i would say, or how much money you have to spend
for audio gear

i would say
1w-1m
or 2.83v-1m

I've tried with no sub and with a 10" in the trunk, and honestly, I thought it sounded best without a sub. Would probably be better if I got speakers up front though. I haven't yet and am currently running 6x9s under the seats and 5s on the rear shelf.

Nice one .. mine:

Components from a bentley in the dashboard...
Pioneers in the footwells...
10'' in the boot with a bass adjuster switch up front, spot on for any music, and crystal clear.. winner.

that would sound loads better if you took the 5s out of the rear shelf, and put them in the front. with the sub in the boot, the air being moved by the sub is acting on the cones of the 5s in the shelf, effectively making them useless. its worth a try, even try the 5s up front, and move the 6x9's to the parcel shelf, to bring the whole sound stage closer to ear level.

ALl subs make crap sounds when you inside the car... If you want a good quality sound in your car, and not just a THUD THUD THUD. you need somthing like kenwood 6x9's and some tweeters, and something like a 600w amp.... Not a sub :)

actually its the enclosure which makes the difference, a well designed enclosure thats got the right capacity for the sub will sound best. Im running 2 6 inch JL subs, in wedge shaped enclosures under the back seat, nice and punchy (bit like the 6x9 kenwoods above) and drop low too. all im running is those, and a set of Rainbow 6 inch components. sounds awesome, and it looks so understated, people think its standard as you can't see the subs at all.

Get out of here. 6x9s are rubbish if you're aiming for decent sound quality.
