1990 mini checkmate 998cc

For those who havent seen my original thread. Car was running fine. Went into garage to have mixture/timing set up. They ring me to tell me car wont move!

Anyway got the car home today. These are the symptoms;-

Engine runs fine
Clutch pedal feels fine and can see actuator arm moving on end of gearbox
Gears cannot be selected with engine running without pressing clutch
When clutch pressed goes nicely into gear - well until you release clutch and nothing happens! It just sits there with engine running.

So any ideas?

Clutch collapsed?
Gear linkage broken?
Gearbox goosed?

Any ideas or other checks to do?

Steve

If driveshafts surely they both wouldnt go?

As for diff - how do I check it? There seems to be very little info in the haynes manual.

if im right, even if 1 driveshaft goes youll experience the same symptoms, not sure how you check the diff though. sounds like the garage gave your car a hard time!

It does sound like the diff. Does the speedo move, that would be an indicator that the gears are moving the mainshaft. Jack it up and try turning a wheel, the other would move in the opposite direction if the diff is intact, though it wouldn't move if the brake's tight.

If you can, get something in writing from the garage about what they claim happened.

Thanks Ethel sounds like a couple of good checks there.

Maybe tomorrow now when I get it up in the air. Check back for results!

I would doubt its clutch related, if you can select gears fine with the engine running then I would forget clutch. It sounds like diff to me aswell, it couldn't be something silly like the roll pin out the gear linkage has come out so you cant select gears?

Paul.

Cheers Pauly - think we are homing in now - I didnt think it was clutch but I wasnt sure.

I will check gear linkage when I get under the car tomorrow.

If, and it is an if at the mo, it turns out to be a blown diff - I cant believe for one moment this happen when the car was on the garage ramp! Call me an old synic!

If its the driveshaft, you will hear some sort of noise as you try to start..imho its the diff.

could be drive shaft spinning in the drive flange, only one needs to go to loose drive.
to check
with the engine running and the car in gear, check if one drive shaft is spinning and the road wheel is not.

OK got the car up on stands.

If I turn one front wheel by hand the other doesnt move. Tried this with both front wheels with no movement on other.

Started engine put in gear and BOTH wheels rotate. Obviously not enough power to move the car tho.

Does this give us any more clues??

So theres power going to the wheels? Weird :). Does it feel like it wants to pull away when on the ground.

Can you hear any strange grinding or grunching noises when the cars in the air?

Paul.

Yes there is power at wheels but obviously not enough power to move the car.

No car doesnt even feel like moving when on the ground.

No noises whatsoever when in air or on ground.

Could it be clutch stuck off??
