Hey people,

So here is my current engine plan for the next couple of years:

Current: 998cc stage 1 (i have brought a nice stage 3 head and twin hs2s, however, then i found the 1275 going cheap and decided this would work better...?)
This means i do have the bits above for sale ^ :D

This summer build: 1275cc mg metro engine, keep it std(ish) to reduce insurance.

Next few years, rebuild a nice Micra engine and shove that in (i am told it is a nice engine swap if it's your first non a series)

Anyway so that is the plan...subject to change :teehee:

So this summer i will be rebuilding my 1275cc engine (i use the car daily so i need it to be reliable). Although i build most of my 998cc engine last year i would like to go the full way with this a series, so i can learn even more about it than last time. I'm thinking i will rebuild the head and stuff.

Currently got:
1275cc Engine and Gearbox
LEADED head
Ancillaries from my 998 (is there any that are different)
Metro electric dizzy
Spark plugs :dontgetit:
HT leads
2x hs2 twins (Could i use these on the 1275??)

What i need:
Bits to create an unleaded head (is this worthwhile doing?)
Possibly a carb (if i can't use hs2s)
Exhaust manifold (can i use my old backbox? is it jus the manifold that will restrict?)
Piston rings
Main bearings
Big end bearings
Gaskets

So what i really need is tips and advice on any bits i should be buying that will increase power(without increasing insurance) andd increase reliability. Also any good tips like david vizards of carb modifications would be useful! (yes i am attempting to get hold of the book!)

For a Relatively Inexpensive work up the following will yield appreciable results.

1) Use your leaded head as an exchange for a converted head, or have it done. Unless your in the engineering business it not a Diy job. Better to go stage 2-3 and get the inlet manifold matched to the head. Spec it for 10.1-1 compression.

2) Fit an LCB rather than play with the existing exhaust manifold

3) If you’re having the crank reground for new bearings spend the extra £70-100 to get in wedged and rebalanced, this will lighten the whole bottom end and is the equivalent to shaving 40-50pound off the rest of the car.
Work up the flywheel assembly as well for optimum results

From the insurance point of view all you need declare is that it is a 1275 cooper spec engine with an lcb and stage 2-3 head because that’s precisely what it is.

"which carb would you go with?"

Bearing in mind this is your daily drive
For ease of tuning & reliability a single Hs4, for performance the twin carbs
but they will need more work setting up and more regular servicing to keep them in tune.
Single carb will be cheeper to insure!

A HIF44 will be a better carb than a HS4 the HS4 will stangle power.

i suppose a hiff 44 would be more reliable and cheaper insurance...

I believe the best all round carb for a larger bore engine, decent economy, decent power, quieter than a webber.
