I'm experiencing a strange problem with my 1989 Mini 30:
A couple of months ago I installed a new Sony radio (nothing fancy, CD player and radio) with 2 new JBL small 4" speakers (2-ohms but according to JBL safe to use on 4 ohm headunits). No amplifiers nor anything extra. I used the wiring that was used with the OEM Phillips headunit. The headunit states 50w per channel.
Now, sometimes when I turn on the high beams (which also light up the spot lights) my radio turns off for a couple of seconds. Sometimes it doesn't loose the memory settings but some other it loose them.
To be honest, the other day I was doing things under the bonnet and somehow I moved a relay placed behind the windshield wiper (I think it's for the fog or spot lamps) and it made a short with the body with a relatively big spark blow. I checked all the electricals in the car and everything seemed to work fine (lights, horn, wipers, etc). Although I'm not entirely sure, I think the radio problem may have begun at that time.
I think it has nothing to do with the alternator rating, because it even happens with the engine off and the ignition in the first (Acc) position. When the radio is turned on and I touch move the wires around the fuse box, it also happens. I noticed that if I remove the right side wire from fuse # 2, (which is supposed to be live, used for memory) the unit also turns off, which means to me that the radio won't work if the memory wire is not connected.
Can it be possible that a bad connection of the live (memory) wire at the fuse box, interrupts the current momentarily to the radio when the high beams are turned?
Can anybody give me some advice?
Thanks in advance.

I had a problem with my alpine headunit shutting off when I indicated. Turned out to be my alternator was not charging the battery so voltage was right down. The unit needed a set voltage to work or would switch off. Have a look at that side of things.

check all the grounds, especially the one from the battery to the body, im still running a stock alternator on my pioneer hu, pushing 2 6x9's, a jl audio 1000/1 amp, and 1 10" kicker L7 solobaric, and i have yet to have my system cut out. tho i am also using an optima yellowtop battery.

If poking wires helps it could be your fusebox thats dodgy, might be worth changing it, along with all the fuses if they look corroded anyway if its not been done for a while.
