Most unusual for an HIF 44 to be 'worn' so much it needs a re-con. What's wrong with it ? Probably easier/cheaper to just get another good secondhand unit.

i took it apart today for a clean to find that the previous owner hadnt looked after it at all . the float chamber had siezed & a little screw has been snapped off & half of the thread is still in the hole the whole carb smelt of thinners i dont know if the prevoious had tryed to clean it & just given up & bolten it back together or it had been sat for a while & the fuel had gone off ?
ive bought a recon unit off ebay looks good & has had a total recon of all its parts . should it be a bolt on job & then set the mixture & i should be alright ?
also how would you tell if someone has changed the needle in a carb to suit the engine spec ?

You can get a rebuild kit from most suppliers, even minispares are selling genuine su kits.
I'd get one with a plan butterfly, and for needles, try starting with BDL or BBW.
Getting hold of a copy of 'tuning su carbs' and a hynes manual its definately worth, if you arent experienced with SU it you wont be able to do the initial settings.
