Has anyone fitted the old speedos where the needle moves along rather than around like in the link below:

Would it be a big of a job as I was speaking to a friend who was considering fitting something like that his car (not a Mini) and thought has anyone done it to a Mini?

That'd look nice, especially mounted in an autoplas dash!

what an oddity.
The proper smiths speedo for minis, looks way better. That one wont actually match the car.

I think it would be something more along the lines of this:

or maybe even this?

It's not for my mini before anyone asks I have my dials sorted.
Just thought the idea may sound interesting.

That could work really well, it would definitely be different.

Superb!
Something different!
I love these old speedos.
Both the one you've shown and the Smiths one linked above.
Many, many years ago a friend and I fitted a Volvo 144 speedo into a Mini. It was all self contained (ie speed, fuel, temp and warning lights). We made a pod for it and mounted it onto the top dash rail. The electrics were easy to sort out.
We did have a couple of problems. The fuel gauge didn't read quite right, but we soon sorted that by bending the fuel gauge arm. The speedo cable needed cutting and we soldered one half of the Volvo cable to one half of a Mini cable (the end that goes into the gearbox). The speedo did read slightly wrong, but was in my favour as it read 30 MPH when I was doing about 27 MPH.
I say go for it, be good to see something different from the 'norm'.
And as for the problems I had, try SpeedyCables who can make up the cables and calibrate it all for you.

Ive just aquired one of these units for my scamp project. (there is no dash to speak of so its a blank canvas)
They were fitted to the austin/morris 1100's and 1300's
hoping that it will be a fairly strait bodge to get it working as the wiring is 95% identical to the mini loom im using and also it should read fairly accurately in terms of speed as the austins ran on 13's and the scamp is goin on 12's.

Am I wrong in thinking Allegros also had a strip speedo when the first came out?
I guess I am as I found a piccy of the legendary Quartic wheel with the 70's clock radio styling instrument pod I remember. Also found an advert for an Allegro ABS pump!
