Autobox Grinding

1979 morris mini 1000 auto

i picked the car up today for £400 with no MOT or Tax. when i started driving the car, i instantly noticed that when the car was put straight into "D" it squeeled an grinded, rolled forward then clunked. it drove fine until it shifted into second gear, then squeeled grinded and clunked and drove fine. it did this through all gears. the previous owner said it was a loose cambelt. is he correct?

how do i fix this?

anything i should check on the mini before i start daily driving it?

besides this i noticed the radiator cap has no gasket and causes the car to over heat. the brakes also dont grab until about the last cm of pedal travel.

can anyone give me more info on this car, as this is my first mini and im fairly ignorant to the culture and workings of minis.

get a new radiator cap that should stop the overheating.

brakes could probably do with bleeding, see if that sorts out the problems if not then maybe check the pistons on the front discs arent seized, also check the brake master cylinder just to be safe.

can't help you with what could be wrong with the gearbox though

Hi,

Any squeeling in an AUTO box is a bad thing and will result in more damage.... ultimately destroying more of the internals incurring wxtra cost to rectify or replace :)

What usually happens is that one or more of the band piston seals fail which results in the bands not being applied with enough force causing them to slip they then wear out the main drum and the top & reverse drum :)

The debris this causes meanwhile is circulating around the valve body which can then cause the wrong bits to stick...... thus causing the clutch plates within each drum to burn out destroying the steel reaction plates (steels)

Unfortunately this may be a terminal case for this auto box.....

The piston seals can be changed with the box in the car.... but it's not easy and rarely corrects the issue as the fault is now down to wear of other parts.

YOu could try just driving it about to see if it gets any worse, whilst getting hold of one that is in a better condition.... :(

Cambelt ...... what cambelt ???
