Hi there

I've got a facet fuel pump that is very noisey... I was thinking of making an enclosure to reduce noise a little bit. Do these need air circulation for running or cooling or am I ok?

Its currently bolted to the rear seat back in the boot.

Thanks
Mike

usually electric fuel pumps are mounted on the rear subframe. you could possibly move it over there and you will not hear it that much. you can also place some rubber between the pump and the metal you are mounting it to

You do know you're meant to bolt then straight to things, meant to be rubber mounted.

Edit

Also mounted mine in the boot. Can hear it on key turn but once the engine is running you can't. Then again my car ain't quiet.

They definately need airflow, dont enclose it. If necessary use some rubber mounts like exhaust rounds between the pump and metal. I have the same thing, and the maker of the car made a metal bracket to space it away from the back seat as well - made no difference when I removed this and bolted with the rubbers only to the seat back.

My pump is too tall to mount on subframe, and would be too close to exhaust.

The other thing to do is close any holes between boot and car and stick a piece of carpet to seat panel.

It should be mounted on noise dampening rubber "cotton reels"........... and must be open to the air to enable cooling.

Does it vary in noise or is it consistantly loud? It could be airlocked. Mine had air trapped in it to begin with. The sollution was to disconnect the regulator and pump a lot of fuel through rapidly. Since then there hasn't been a problem but I haven't had the tank completely empty or low enough to draw air in.

Mine is now working as expected (it's loud but it's the correct kind of loud and not stupidly loud like it was before). I'm very aware of it if I have the ignition on without the engine running but I don't do that anyway as the coil can cook. With the engine running I can hear the pump but it's not distracting. Mine is mounted inside the boot, on cotton reels and at a 45 degree angle as the instructions suggested. The angle is also supposed to prevent air locking but I'm not so sure about how effective that is. If I wanted to make it even quieter I would focus on putting felt on the seatback to stop the panel drumming with the pump. It really doesn't bother me though.

Get yourself a straight cut gearbox/drops. You won't be able to hear it then >_<

Cheers guys - some good replies there.

It is a little square one. It's constantly loud I would say. I'll check the rubber mountings and check for air locks...

Many thanks

Im thinking because its attached to the rear seats, its going to vibrate the whole panel like 1 big speaker lol

Hmm... difficult to say whether it's airlocked. Mine used to vary in loudness as the air moved around but if it was really massively full of air then maybe it could be loud all the time. I don't know. I would definitely have a go at trying to clear any air from the pump and lines.

Yeah, exactly that. All you can do is minimise things by mounting it as close to the edge of the panel as possible and damping the panel. Damping the panel to stop it ringing actually has a massive effect. I just haven't chosen to take it to the nth degree because it creates more grief if you have to strip it out later and you find the rear panelwork is hidden under an inch of felt and evostik. I still prefer mounting it in the boot to mounting it outside the car with all the crud and road dirt.
