Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
Mini Mayfair 998
1992 K reg (only mod is a KnN air box filament filter thing!)
Not too sure if my mini is using too much fuel, or does this sound right, and if its not, what could be the cause and what i could do to rectify this??!! (sorry for all the Q's!)
I have filled the car up with £20 pounds, and it was full up on the gauge, and have driven probably 10, possibly 20 miles since then at the most, and the needle is half way down the petrol gauge already!! i dont drive her "hard" and thought that this was a bit much petrol consumption??
Any help greatly appreciated, am new to minis!!
Many thanks guys!!

check for leaks first ,fuel can leak out of the filler cap if filled to the brim ! or it could be that the gauge is reading wrongly as a lot of mini fuel gauges do !
i would fill up until filler pump turns itself off and wont allow you to fill anymore
drive the car for 100 miles then fill it up again at the same pump until it wont take anymore.
make a note of how much petrol you put in ( you will have to convert litres to gallons ( plenty of convertors on internet ) )
divide the exact amount of miles driven by the amount of gallons you filled it and you will get the MPG figure .
for this to be accurate your speedo has to be accurate ( non standard wheels or a replacement engine?gearbox can wreck the accuracy of the speedo )
for example i have fitted a mg metro engine/box to my 1988 auto mini city and the speedo reads 10 mph wrong

We have a Mayfair that reads 3/4 full when it is full to the brim, then after about 30 miles it reads 1/2 full. It reads empty when it's down to 3 gallons or so. My 1964 Cooper 'S' reads about 1/8th full as it is about to run out.
We even changed the tank sender on the Mayfair, checked all the earths and the wiring front to back. It's just Minis!

Check the mixture, Im running my 998 at about 50mpg or so
plus don't forget that if you put the petrol pump into the tank the tank will only full up about 1/2-2/3s, I keep filling mine till I can see the fuel near the filler neck lol

The figure for urban driving for a standard 998 I usually go off is 35mpg, obviously changes with driving style and journeys taken. As said you can get great mpg upto 50 mpg but working towards 40 as an average is good too.

I keep seeing 50mpg and think "That's a lot!" but then I remember all you guys are talking in Imperial gallons, that'd be just under 42mpg in US gallons.

I think I've been getting around 35 miles per US gallon on the highway (about 42 miles per Imperial gallon), although I've just done some tuning up so that could have changed. I was doing over 200 miles in 6 gallons anyway, I know.
