Hi all,

trouble is, I had an hour and nothing to do, so I did a search for "Mini" on eBay and after filtering out the obvious
a pandora's box of buyable bits opened up.
I settled quickly in after five minutes or so to comparing this set of twin carbs to that set of twin carbs and now I've
got a bee in my bonnet about having twin carbs on my standard 998.

So what's the world's experience of falling for this vice of wanting more carburetors than it was built with ?

Is there any real gain to be had or is it just petrol head desire and something to talk about ?

Best wishes
Monty

Twin carbs are great when they're suited to the engine and set up right. You can gain quicker throttle responce, more torque and a little more power at the top end.

However, they are much harder to set up and people have problems with them coming out of tune.

The way i see it is, that theres twice as many parts to go wrong and are generally not worth the effort over a single carb.

When I was a kid - dad put a hot cam, twin SUs, Mini 7 head, LCB manifold and big exhaust on my Mothers 998 Riley Elf Mk3. That was a quick little car, well mannered (didnt cough and splutter like my Webber) and definately way quicker than standard. That was the car I learnt to drive in. Pity it turned into a big pile of rust.

I've never ued them but I think I'd rather have a single carb, purely because I find it hard enough to set up one carb - having two to set up and service doesn't sound like fun to me. Although I'm sure that when set up correctly they're great.

ive just got some, like said above, they are best carbs suited to my engine, any others would be too much or too little... they were set up when i got the car rolling roaded, and i was assured they would last for a good while... im sure balancing them would need doing, but i have seen a gunson carb balancing kit, that teamed with a colourtune, i can't see how you could go wrong...

pretty sure there is no advantage to sticking them on a standard 998....

Spend your hard earned cash on a decent Stage 1 kit and a rolling road session. Had twins on my standard 998 and they looked sexy but I wished I hadn't bothered, to be honest!
