Hi guys,

When someones following me they say they can smell a really strong petrol smell (raw petrol). But the mixture is spot on if not a little lean its running 0.54% CO and 349 PPM HC and the timing is also set. What can it be? Could the carb need a service?

I was going to service the carb in the next month but have now got hold of a 1275 so will service the HIF on that one before I put the 1275 in (no point in servicing the 998 carb when it will only do a few miles).

Paul.

Cant see any obvious leaks out the overflow and I dought it would be coming out the breather for the tank.

That figure indicates you're actually running lean and need at first a bit of richening.
If you still feel petrol smell inside the car its usually the fuel tank vent or petrol coming out the fuel overflow.

check everywhere. was driving someone one in drake once and the main pipe to the pump had managed to split, had to syphen the tank YUM and try and get it sorted at 11pm one night :S

check the tank dont have a leak, check the fuel line all the way along the pan, check any joins, bends, kinks, all rubber hoseing (thats where mine went)

short of asking someone to drive it and running behind it, they may not be used to drivin behind a mini

edit: missed a p :D

This is other mini owners in convoy :D.

Its coming from the outside, cant smell it inside. Just thought it might be the jet leaking?

Ill have a play with my mixutre this afternoon.

As you stop, you feel a strong smell inside the car if the jet is leaking.
More probably is petrol coming out the fuel overflow pipe.
Set mixture correctly at first, it also changes exhaust fumes smell.

Don't forget that the carb is right behind where the centre speedo would be, so there is a hole lol so any leaking will result in a strong smell, simply because its right where the fumes can get into the car

maybe the valve gaps are too tight and on overlap fresh fuels jumping down the exhuast and making a lovely wiff or could be the over flow pipe as suggested if on mech pump or leccy

Would of thought the emmisions would be sky high if that happened.

Paul.
