Hi All,

This is my first post and it's a pain that it's a problem that I need your expertise on.

I am having trouble with my indicators and hazards. I have been reading other topics relating to other peoples issues with them but don't seem to be having much joy.

A little while ago my indicators stopped working, along with the brake lights, rear demister and fog lights. I checked all the fuses that I could see (3 or 4 in the interior, about 6/7 behind the air filter and the main fuse box) they all seemed to be fine. After playing about with them the indicators and everything started working.

Yesterday, the same thing happened again, but only the indicators/hazards stopped working, the brake lights were fine. I have a few ideas, but would appriciate any help you could give me. Since none of the indicators work (and neither do the green flashing lights on the dash), it might be that no power is getting to them, or the flasher unit might have broke. The only thing is, I don't know where to start looking or what the flasher unit looks like. There are a few yellow boxes (1 orange) in the engine compartment, could this be what's wrong?

Many thanks in advance! :D

Sef

What year is the car? Sounds like a late model that will have one flasher unit for haz & ind, and a relay to link it to the indicator stalk when the ignition is on.

There are two seperate flasher units, one for hazards, one for indicators. They are usually underneath the bonnet (near the windscreen washer motor if your mini is like mine have been), although sometimes one of them is inside the car underneath the steering column. They are rectangular or square boxes depending on where they were purchased from.

If you've had other electrical problems in the past it may not be flasher units causing the problem??? but as they are quite cheap and just clip in it's a good idea to eliminate them being the problem before you do too much else

Good luck!

Might be worth a look at removing the fuse box under the bonnet & check for corrosion on the back of it !

Thanks. There are two yellow boxes next to the washer motor. Would this be them? Do they sell them in halfords, or is this a specialist thing?

The problem will be with the hazard switch. Spray some WD40 into it - and switch it back and forth a good few times - 'snapping' it into position each time. Chances are that will fix it!

All good stuff, will check that later tonight. :) Do the indicators have a seperate fuse and circuit to the rest of the electrics?

I think the relay should be on the bulkhead near the wiper motor !

You may be right, I did fiddle around with the switch when I checked all the fuses, that may have corrected the problem. Will try tonight after work. Thanks :)

Sorry for being ignorant, but what does a relay do? Switch between two circuits?

They are usually lodged in the sound insulation material that covers the bulkhead just to the left of the washer motor so this could be them!? I've usually had black or silver ones, never seen any yellow ones but have only had two minis (although one of them had a prob with burning out flasher units so replaced them about 6 times!) - here are the ones that minispares list to give you an idea of what they can look like -and sorry I meant to type circular or rectangular not square!

http://www.minispares.com/Search.aspx

I've heard of people buying them from Halfords, but I've only bought them through local old school stylie motor factors, or Moss Bros, and as you can see minispares stock them too.

Hi, Sorry, that link didn't bring anything up. Do you have the product code to hand? Later on tonight, I will take a picture and post it so you can see what i'm talking about. Thanks.

I got mine from an local autofactors shop, I belive this is the one you need from minispares:

http://www.minispare.....0FLASHER UNIT

Perhaps also have a look around that site and pick up a few other bits they have for sale on there to make it worth it, check out their oil/filter combos and spark plugs, means you can give the car a good service as well

Just be careful as it can be a bit addictive if you decide "ah I will just buy one more bit!" :)

ive just had the same problem.....turned out to be the inline fuse holders behind air filter. i changed mine to inline continental type and cured the problem. if i remember rightly it was orange, with green or purple causing the grief.

i sprayed wd40 on the hazzard switch has our friend suggested and they have worked fine ever sine. mines a 93/94 L reg Spi, i think the problem is that the in line fuse holders become hot and brittle.

good luck buddy....
