hi, today i set off from work as usual, took off the handbrake and set off
it didnt want to set off,
then the rear laft wheel was locked up and dragging
i stopped after about 15 metres, and kicked the wheel a bit
went back and forward a few times
then it made a grim bang from the drum and started rolling
all fine,
but now every time i brake that rear drum makes the same banging sound under medium ish braking
if you try to brake a bit harder its a louder bang but then brakes
if you brake less you get not a lot, then a repetetive bang as it hits that point

is it a case of new rear shoes required?
or is it something else?

cheers

why not just take the drum off and have a look, we could guess all day, but quickest solution would be to look.

while your stripping it down also take the time to check the handbrake quadrants, they have a habit of sticking which then leads to the shoes rubbing, sticking on, making scraping noises.

Good chance it has pulled a lining off a shoe. You really should NOT use the car until you get it sorted! Brakes are Safety Critical !

I'd say new shoes at least, get a set on order now, you may want to consider a pair of new release springs as well.

When it's apart give it a good clean and make sure you get teh brake adjuster nice and free to turn, and that the slave cylinder is operating properly before rebuilding.

Good luck, let us know what you find in there!

Hey Sam, You got the bits to repair it? If your replacing the cylinder be careful taking the copper pipe off, they're often rusty and will break, meaning you may need a new one of them too. Make it up yourself, or you can pick a set up on ebay.

Which side was the shoe broken? I ask as if the other side has a leaky cylinder you'll be wanting to change the shoes on that side too. A bit more work, but you may as well if you're swapping the cylinders, and adjusting them up properly will give you good brakes!

A good answer, and good to see a driver with sense!

Have you repaired it all yet, or a bit more to do?
