1980 Mini 1000, I'm replacing the inner CV boot on the passenger (drivers for most of you) side. I freed the balljoints and the hub assembly is off and now I am at this stage:

The current plan of action is to disassemble the outer CV joint and slid the new boot along the axle and into place. I was wondering:

-The rest of the pot joint is still on the car, is there anything I have to do besides sliding the inner ball cage back into place?
-Taking off the inner ball cage requires some hammering yes? Would taking off the outer CV joint be the easiest method?
-Do I have to preload the wheel bearings when I assemble everything back together?

Cheers!

Dont mean to hijack your post but doing the same thing but how do you get the outer cv joint cage out??(i got the outer cv off the axle/driveshaft)

to take off the outer c v joint you need to remove both metal ties slide the boot back so u can see, then clean the muck away so you can see the circip, this is what hold on the cv joint then get a hammer and hit the centre off the cv joint and i found if you hit on the opening of the circip it comes off easy but remember to replace all the grease so its all the same brand of stuff so this means you have remove and pull the whole cage out, wash and then fit new grease (otherwise it could fail again soon)

Eonblue -
Take the inner CV cage off the shaft
Rebuild the pot joint with a new gaiter - the gaiter attaches to the inner cage and the outer pot, it does not secure to the shaft
Rebuild the hub assembly, make sure the snap ring is on the driveshaft and locate the driveshaft into the pot joint (and that the driveshaft locks into the pot joint).

You don't split the cage from the outer CV joint, they aren't servicable - treat them as a 1 piece item.

Is there supposed to be a snap ring on inner end of the assembly pictured or is it on the piece that's still attached to the transmission? Do I have to seperate the pot joint off the car?

Theres 1 snap ring on the dirveshaft which the other cv locks onto and one on the diff output shaft which the pot joint locks onto.

Paul.

Okay, so the axle went together smoothly. I checked the FSM and it didn't mention anything about wheel bearing preload. It was for front disc equipped cars and I have drums so does that still apply? Do I need to use a flat washer, tighten, and reassemble?

Yes, do that every time the alignment of the bearing parts is disturbed.
