Does anyone know if the ignition on a 1275 Spi engine (ie in my Sidewalk) is linked in anyway to the MEMS ECU?

Im hoping its a standalone system and the MEMS only operates the fuel injection.

Thanks in advance,
Darren.

Nope the ecu controls the ignition timing and the fueling. Whats the problem?

No problem as such. Im just thinking of ways to tidy up engine bay. Im doing up a sidewalk mini. I remember my old mini (1979 850cc) was prone to issues when it rained - dizzy getting water logged. I was therefore wondering about repositioning the ECU, fuses and relays etc to the inside of the car and perhaps fitting megajolt (edis 4 wasted spark mappable ignition) which means i could remove the dizzy altogether. However if the ECU controls the sparks then this isnt as easy as i thought.

I should have said before, my sidewalk has a flip front fitted so front wheels share everything they pick up with the engine. Last owner has silicon'd the MEMS plug, but im sure putting somewhere dry is a better solution. Shame its so bloody big! Ive seen the UMS unit but its too expensive for me.

Other option would be bike throttle bodies, remove dizzy and use megajolt to control it all. This would do away with all o fthe std Rover bits but would take a lot of sussing out ref the new wiring loom. Probs very doable though, this type of thing is common place with the kit car bods.

Well im mid way through my 92 cooper resto project at the moment. I have relocated the fuses and the bullet connectors inside the car. It has tidied up the engine bay quite alot and should make it more reliable. i have left the ecu where it is....it has a waterproof plug on it as standard fromt the factory and the only lt ignition wires are between the ecu and coil. Whilst its all out i have cleaned and retaped all the wiring.
