I've seen pics of people doing this but don't know how they're doing it without crushing the side touching the ground. Is it something one person can do by themselves? Do you leave the wheels and suspension on?

I need to look at the floor and check for rust. I'm suspicious.

I intend to roll my shell on its side shortly. Im stripping everything off so its down to a bare shell. I figure that the less weight, the less damage its gonna do. Im gonna get some old tyres free from the local tyre fitters, lay them out where im gonna roll it, and then me and a friend will PUUUUSH until the car is laying on its side on the tyres.

PLEASE BE AWARE I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS AND THESE ARE ONLY MY OPINIONS!! IF YOU DO THIS AND IT DOES DAMAGE, DONT COME TO ME :)

EDIT: If your only doing this to check for rusty floors, would it not be easier to put it up on axle stands and crawl under? (Or go ask the local garage nicely if you can borrow there ramps for half hour?)

What you realy need is somthing like this. It will prevent any damage to the side. It does not matter how carefull you are, the panel on the side are not strong enough to take the weight of the car. I guess it depents on how long you are planning to leave there? Still would suggest getting a car roller/tilter, you can try and see if you can borrow or hire one in here.

I recommend buying a rollover spit from M-Machine. Ther are specifically made for the mini. If your rear seat bulkhead has a large hole which is covered with a fibre board, their standard spit will fit.
When you are finished using it, you can then sell it on as its invaluable for anyone restoring a mini. Bear in mind, that the car needs to be stripped of all running gear including subframes.

Here are pics of the spit which i have from M-Machine.

You used to be able to buy a sort of hoop type device that went over the car and bolted onto the wheel studs, I've been after one for some time, anyone else know what i'm talking about? :)

Two old mattresses, one on the floor, one on a vertical wall, a normal jack, axle stands and three mates, thats how I would do it. Would be difficult to do with the wheels left on though.

Id jack the car up and place on axle stands, but just the side closest to the wall (kind of essential, weight of the subframes may take the car over onto its roof, the wall and second mattress would stop this) take the wheels off the side that is nearest the wall, slide the mattress under the hubs on the one side, jack up off axle stands, lower hubs onto mattress. Then your ready to tilt, id imagine you'd need at least three people.

Even though its a mini, bare in mind how much weight is involved here, you could easily get crushed so beware and make sure theres plenty of people around to help you. Bear in mind the hubs may easily get damaged aswell, depends how good the mattress is! Make sure the mattress on the floor doesnt slip either, try and attach it to the floor in some way.

Obviously, as said, having the car as light as possible will make it a lot easier.

i've been doing this with my bare shell, just been simply placing a couple of old tyres under the roof gutter to stop the sides from touching the floor, side seams seem to be taking the strain but if you want to keep this perfect just put an old matress under it. easy enough to do with 2 people aswell

i did have my car on its side when it was in one piece (engine out of course though) but i wouldnt recommend it, alot of weight and not the safest thing ever.

I used a double mattress on the floor, one person each end and just turn the shell onto the matress.didnt damage the sides of mine.If you use tyres then put them where the columms are and not where the middle of the quarter panel is,seen this done and leave a hell of a mess
