Hewwo,

Got another tattoo today and the guy said not to use cream on it - he said to leave it to dry and let the scab fall off naturally. Anyways, for my other tattoos, I've used bepanteum (or however you spell it!) and had no problems so I was just wondering what other people had been told/thought :)

In my pharmacy days *goes all misty eyed and starts sucking Werthers* people used to buy Preparation H alot, I used this on my first one with dressings.

When I had another tat (I said tat) done they told me to use vaseline and clingfilm - I only kept this up a couple of days then just used a dressing and savlon - the clingfilm technique didn't seem very sterile.

I can't say which is better though because I've only had white tattoos so don't know how it would affect the coloured ink. My tattoos still look good though from any of the ways which I tried.

Actually that wasn't really helpful was it? I'll crawl back under my rock :)

Hey, this may be of some interest:

http://tattoo.about....cr_cntrdctn.htm

I think bapantham is pretty good and prep H too

I have been using this burn cream called acrflex and find thats also good stuff.

you can use nothing but your tattoo will be very dry and crack and may get drop outs and be more itchty (depending where it is)

im not a tattooist..and its just through trying these things that i have come to my conclusions.

cheers!

John

I've got a mate who used nappy rash cream in the early stages and then switched to cocoa butter once it had healed a bit more.

Heater - it wasn't me who didn't want to use cream, the tattoo bloke said to leave it and I thought it was a bit strange so questioned it! Saying that, his tat's didn't seem amazing in quality so maybe that's why!!

Thanks everyone :) Bepanthen gets my vote too

Your tatt is going to heal regardless of what you put on in, so from that angle - no you don't need any cream. However it will undoubtly heal quicker and more comfortably with some kind of barrier that keeps the optimum conditions for woulnd healing. My choice will (now) always be Bepanthen. A very thin layer 2-3 times a day will keep it moist and stop scabs (with are bad for woulnd healing.) Cling film is good for ankles and feet to stop shoes rubbing but not really anywhere else as your skin needs to breathe.

All tattooists will have an opinion on the best way, the above is what worked best for me

HTH

by the way I'd like to see some pics!!!

Definitely some sort of ointment to keep it moist. If it gets dry, it will scab, and depending on the thickness of the scabbing, you could lose a lot of the tat as the scab works its way off.
