Hi, brought my mini a while back and for some reason the engine number on the log book is only five digits long and is nothing like the one on the engine. I am now not at all sure what engine i have and whther the mileage is genuine as its sposed to have done 55k but the shell looks like its done about 200k!! The number on it is ; 99HB81P139499. Thanks in advance for any help!!

engine no's are normally about 6 digits, where did you get the(99HB81P139499) no from, that looks more like a chassis no than an engine no.
to check your engine no, look just below no 4 spark plug and there should be a plate there with a no on it.
as for finding out its history, don't hold your breath sorry

The 99HB81 means its a post 1985 Metro engine. All engines from engine number 127432 says its an A+ engine and has ungrooved lower main bearings an no circlip on the gudgeon pins, producing a grand total of 42 HP at the crank.

Thanks very much guys - another mystery solved. Just wondering now, are these engines just as easy as a mini engine to modify or not, i have another mini and the engine looks absolutely identical? Will it have the same gearbox as a mini and will it be unleaded or not? If its not unleaded can i use a mini unleaded head on it? Thanks very much!

They are the same engine in the Mini and the Metro, both A+, tho the earlier minis had A series, but they are swapable.
