Ok brief history of things i have replaced,.. Throttle body and stepper motor unit, coolant temp sensor, air temp sensor, lambda sensor, vacuum lines, thermostat, throttle pedal switch, fuel filter. It has had a service isn't really due another but going to do one this weekend anyways, so will have new oil, oil filter, spark plugs, ht leads and probs dizzy cap and rotar arm while im at it.

When i got the cooper (1993 spi) it had a lot of issues, kangerooing on start up (as try to accelerate) and cutting out and over revving, generally running like a bag of spanners. Sprocket kindly put it on his ecu reader and reccomended i replaced a few parts which i have done.

I am now left with the following problems,.. drives okay short distances but after a long drive or a blast up a bypass sitting at about 60-70 ish at 4krpm,.. the car will run fine, but when i then come to a stop say at a junction or a roundabout the car will cut out, it can do this as i put the clutch in to change gear before i have come to a stop. I can then only re-start the car if i have my foot slightly on the accelerator, if i rev it though it will stall,.. got to do some granny like driving and be paranoid at junctions. It has recently started occasionally kangerooing on acceleration on start up but only very breifly.

It was suggested the fuel tank may be preasurising and to open the filler cap when it displayed the symptoms i have done this and nothing doesnt make a sound,..

The fuel pump primes no problems and the stepper motor does its clicky bit no problems. The only other thing i can think of telling you which may or may not help, is the owner before last pulled out the alarm and has made a bit of a mess of some of the wiring. I would of thought the alarm not being present would make a difference on or just after start up not after a bit of a blast.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am now at a total loss and frankly ready to give up and just accept i cant go any distance.

Done full service today; oil, oil filter, spark plugs (already done ht leads) dizzy cap and rotar arm, cleaned K&N air filter too. Also replaced the coil for a performance one. Didn't get round to changing the fan switch though,. as to remove my grill i had to remove my spot lights, which we decided to re-wire so they and the grill can be removed with less hassle,.. also had to fix the horn.

Not gone for a test drive yet though so no idea if any of it has made a difference,.. still sounds a little lumpy on start up though so who knows....

Been for a test drive and service hasnt made a scrap bit of difference. It pleases itself to whether or when it wants to tick over or not.

Hi Linzi,

Have you checked your fuel pressure? The reason I ask is that months ago when you complained about "kangerooing on start up" I started to have the same issue with a 1991 Chevy truck. Eventually the symptoms got worse and even inconsistent. Making a very loooong story short, and after replacing many parts, I finally checked the fuel pressure and it was zero. I replaced the pump and strainer and the problem is fixed. However, what actually caused the erratic behavior were not the usual suspects, a failed pump or a clogged strainer. There is a short piece of hose that connects the pump outlet to the pipes inside the tank that was rotted and had a split about 1/4 of an inch long that allowed the fuel to leak out back into the tank. How the engine ran with zero pressure is a mistery but it could be because the test gauge lack of sensitivity in that range. With the new pump it read fine (9-13 psi similar to the Mini).

Hope this helps,

Ivan

Erm i have been asked if it is the fuel tank pressurising,... checked in the way i was told to (by taking petrol cap off when it displays problems) and nothing no hiss nothing. The fuel pump primes on start up as it should do. I have changed the fuel filter though.

Seems to have settled a little after yesterday but still poorly  fed up, no idea what to do or replace or check now :)

have you checked the tightness of the manifold retaining nuts on the back of the cylinder head? i found mine to be so loose i could undo them all by hand... they must have been slowly undoing since the garage down the road put new bushes in .. and every now and again (randomly) all pressure and power was lost in the engine... worth checking anyway...they should be tightened to 22nm which is almost as tight as the fuel feed and return union nuts to the throttle body...

it would seem to settle.. then go flat at the MOST inopportune moments... (like being in the middle of 6 lanes at 65mph on the M1...) or just on the way to an important meeting... but never when taking it to a garage or when taking plastics to the recycling bank...

Are you still okay to take a look this weekend? I'm free both days, so what ever is easiest/best for you. I can come there I'm sure it will make it, it will be after the motorway it will die, so will deffo be playing up for you. :) Really appriciate any help

Zorgster I had the manifold off not so long ago when the manifold snapped in half, so I doubt the nuts will be loose, will check when the engine is cool enough as not to burn my hand
