am getting fed up of my dtm piece of junk for the following reasons, i have to push my car down the road in the morning before i start it, i have to be in by half 9 so i dont wake the neighbours, and the fuzz keep tugging me.

i have a 1310, kmd276 cam, largebore lcb. i want to get a centre exit with a single 2" / 2 and half inch tail pipe, what i want to know is

how much difference is there with or without the silencer that goes on the link pipe??

and whats reccoimended?

many thanks, samsernie

Centre exit exhausts with large bore exit are damn noisey, so if you want one, get a twin box system. I have one of them, and its quite on tickover, but still loud when pushing.

I think the tail pipe can make a fairly big difference to the noise overall, larger exits seems to give a deeper more offensive note from what I've found, with smaller exits often being slightly more 'buzzy' if you know what I mean.

centre exits do seem to be a bit louder as the flow is totally uninterupted.

I recently changed from a maniflow centre exit 2.75'' backbox to a playmini stainless 2.5'' side exit, using the same maniflow front section with a silencer, and it's MUCH quieter now on the site exit.

If you want a really decent quiet system, speak to Maniflow in salisbury, I was in there a few weeks ago discussing what I wanted from my next exhaust system, and they reckon they can make a really quiet (sub 90dB) system that's totally free flowing, using the very large wide flat miglia boxes at the back, coupled with a long thin centre box after the LCB

Im running a maniflow LCB manifold and a single box RC40 system, its got quite a nice note to it and isn't intrusive :teehee: although it does seem to have a HUGE rear silencer lol

The twin box is quieter and liberates more output from the engine in most cases. It can be worth a few ponies. There is no reason to use a single box system, unless your car is ridiculously low or you simply assume you know how exhausts work based on what Max Power says... :teehee:

OK, yes that's probably one more valid reason!

Here is your solution.

Years ago (when skint) I made my own system out of stainless. I found a straight through silencer and it was comical. I think the silencer removed about 20dB of crackle but the row went straight through. After *peeing* the village off and getting people mentioning the "I" word and the "P" word. I decided to shut it up. Still on a budget, I went down the local scrappy and had a stainless box (rear) from an Audi 80D. I fitted it on (It fitted together) and flashed it up. It was very quiet, but had a racy note. It had a sort of muffled gargly noise. I'd recommend that to anyone. It flowed perfectly and fitted well.

I'm going to run my 1430 (v high CR) through my single box, centre exit maniflow, which should be interesting. I'll be wearing earplugs anyway! I'd like a side exit playmini job, but my anti roll bar mounts are in the way.

seems easier to buy one off the shelf.

RC40 Twin box. Quiet at idle, fruity tone when you want to nail it, Also - it wont make you sound as if you want people to think you have a poorly set-up fart-box V8 in there.

RC40 won't cut it on high HP engines. It will be a limitation.

anything after about 80-90hp you need to consider looking at a 2" system. Maniflow and Playmini would get my vote. The Playmini 2" backbox deffo needs an intermediate silencer though on anything other than a Turbo

when you say 2 " system do you mean the bore of the pipe from the manifold to the backbox, mine is 2"/largebore

Interesting... the RC40 is restrictive at 80-90BHP? It when it was originally designed and tested it became a bit resrictive at 120BHP... Has anybody else done a new test on the current system? The RC40 was designed by an exhaust specialist who was in to the A-series engine. It was designed to be x-long and x-bore size with x-silencers to make it sensible on the road yet deliver the goods. I wonder how many other systems were so designed/developed without any eye-candy involvement. Minex are feasibly the only ones I know of....

Stainless steel resonates much more than mild steel - so any like for like system the s/s one will be noisier.

Bore size makes a noise difference too - the bigger the bore the nosier it is.

The vast majority of road-going A-series engines do not need a system with a bigger bore than 1-3/4" internal diameter.

Straight through or side exit makes little difference - it is the capability of the silencers that maks the noise difference in the main.

Many of the after-market systems are made to what the punters WANT rathe rthan what WORKS for performance/civility.
