I have had a problem with the clutch after changing the crank oil seal while the engine was out. i couldn't work out the problem so i have removed the clutch with the engine still in the car.
Am i correct thet the spline on the crank should turn freely by hand with the car out of gear? mine is quite stiff to turn, a bit of a struggle by hand really.
Can i take the transfer casing off with the engine still in the car?
Need a response pretty quickly as i have only today to get it done, regards Steve

Yes -the primary gear should turn easily by hand - and yes - you can wiggle the transfer case off in car. May need a bit of jacking up of the engine - which may need the rad to be removed first.

before you take the whole case off try pulling the primary gear out. it can be removed with careful persuation/levering with a pair of claw hammers as all that holds it in is the seal, and or course the C clip on the end of the crank.

if you had the primary gear off when you changed the seal yo may have put the bronse ring on that sits behind it the wrong way round, it has a chamfer that must face the engine.

Good point - but if you do that - you WILL need to fit a new seal!

Hi, we didn't take the primary gear off when we changed the seal, just taped it to stop it damaging the seal.
Would this be causing the clutch problems if it isn't spinning freely? It can be turned but it is tight.
Any ideas as to why it is tight, i suppose it could be any one of a number of things?
regards Steve

It should turn quite easily yes, If your going too take off the transfer gear housing, I would remove the engine, just alot more room too work and less likly too make mistakes. Although it can be removed with engine in the car, but if you find a problem your likely too have too remove it anyway.

You may have set the seal too deep in the casing. Since you used tape to cover the splines (perfectly acceptable by the way, I'm not questioning that at all) I guess you don't have the proper tool that sets the seal depth so you may have pushed it in too far.

I have undone the bolts to the transfer casing with the engine in place, i have gone to tape up the spline and it is now loose even though it doesn't look like the casing has moved? I doubt if i can get the transfer cover off with the engine in but i will have a go.
When the new seal was fitted i took the transfer casing to my mechanic friend who taped it in with an old bearing casing. The front of the seal is flush as i presume it sould be? I would have thought if it was fractionally to far in then it would have 'rubbed' it away at the back?
I really need to get the casing off i suppose to find the trouble. Steve
