Help With Fiberglass Boot And Bonnet. Double Skinned ?

can anyone help with my decision with my fiberglass bonnet and boot. Im just in the process of ordering a new bonnet and boot but im lookin for some advise on if its worth double skin or not.

I personally would always go with a double skin, due to the added strength and better shape holding it gives. I have seen far too many single skin bootlids which dont fit properly in the corners, and also crack easier due to the flexibility when open.

Bonnets just single skin, havent seen a double skin FG bonnet.
Bootlids are available in double skin, is what i have, and in my opinion single skin bootlids arent worth.

Bootlids are available in double skin, is what i have, and in my opinion single skin bootlids arent worth.


The use of composite panels is to facilitate weight loss.

For instance a boot lid made with fiberglass using probably 5 layers of chopped strand matting and a gel coat will rock the scales at 3.5kg. A steel boot lid is nearly 12!

I hope for the boot lid that i`m about to make will come in at under a kg. Considering i made the mold from a heritage skin it should be the same shape.

Mines around 2kg and its double skin.
