This is one for the FAQ.

Had trouble finding out the sizes of the castle nut today, searched everywhere only to find someone had posted it as the wrong size.. Went and bought the wrong socket. Later found out the following:

Disc type castle nut: 34mm

What is the size for cars with drum brakes on the front?

Also, Why does haynes never tell you the size? Grr..

This won't be going in the FAQ. Partly because it's not entirely correct and partly because the correct information is already here several times over. The disc brake hub nut is made in two different AF sizes. 1 & 5/16" and 34mm. Rover changed to the 34mm nut during production but both types fit the same CV joint threads. Always use the right size tool for whatever fastener you are using, if you have a couple of Minis it pays to have both sizes of socket. The drum brake hub nut is 1 & 1/8" although in a similar way some manufacturers supply 28mm AF nuts that have the right thread. Presumably metric bar stock is cheaper.

Haynes doesn't tell you the AF sizes of nuts because they don't really need to. If you don't have a tool that fits and need to get one it's fairly easy to measure the nut.

Moved to Mini Chat, it's not a technical problem really.

Didn't realise myself there were multiple hub nut sizes, until I ground/mashed/bashed a seized hub nut off last week. A replacement was bought only for me to realise later when I needed to tighten it that it was a 34mm metric nut. The socket I have is 1 5/16, which is too small!

I see now (belatedly) that metric and A/F variants can be bought from more than one mini parts supplier... relief! please lets not have another rarely used tool purchase!
