Yet another question from me...I need to change the drivers side inner pot joint boot. I split the ball joints and got the hub and shaft out. But my problem is that i dont know how to remove the ball's and the ball cage so that i can take the old boot off (its split) and put the new one on. Can someone point me in the right direction??? Im sure i read in the haynes about taking a circlip off but i think that was for the other side of the drive shaft.

I just tap the bearing cage off carefully with a hammer, its an interference fit on the splines on the end of the shaft. Take care that you dont damage it though.

DO NOT remove the cage and balls from the inner member of the joint. You haven't finished removing the joint from the shaft, all you've done is seperate the parts of the joint. The inner member of the joint is still on the end of the shaft, as said above it is splined onto the shaft. You can drive it off by using an old, large flat screwdriver as a drift to strike the end of the joint that you will find inside the gaiter at the end of the shaft. Once you have the joint off the shaft it's easy to change the gaiter.

Dan you have confused me slightly now. I removed the shaft from the car with the shaft still on the hub but i took the pot joint off but all the balls and the cage still remain on the shaft. Are you saying i just need to gently drift off the cage with the balls in it to change over the boots? Some pics would be really helpful.
Cheers

No, you haven't removed the joint from the shaft. All you've done is break it in half. The star shaped section that the ball cage is pressed over is the inner member of the pot joint. The shaft is pushed into the middle of it. You need to remove the shaft from it in order to replace the boot. Ideally you would never seperate a driveshaft by splitting the pot joint but it seems to have become the norm. It is a bodge though, albeit a minor one.
