No I don't think you can sync backwards. If you plug the iPod in it will be wiped. This is why there is a button in iTunes to allow Apple to keep a backup of your library on their server. There is a way that you can copy your library accross if you upgrade computers and that might help but I can't remember what it is. It'll be on the Apple site, there's a lot of help on there.

This man speaks sense, i've done this a number of times when my pc has wiped itself.I believe you can copy all the music off the ipod onto the pc by using "show hiden folders", all the songs will be in random folders but at least you can copy them onto your pc...

Have a google session to find out how to enable hidden folders and then just plug it in, go into the folder and copy all the music onto a file onto your desktop or whatever.

Simples

to access the show hidden files option open an explorer window, select tools/folder options then the view tab, scroll down then select 'show hidden files and folders' (on win XP)
edit: To stop itunes wiping your ipod, when you plug it in and itunes recognises it it should show something along the lines of 'this ipod is synced with another itunes library, erase and sync or cancel' click cancel, or just leave it at that before copying all the tunes over.

There is a very good free program for copying back to the PC from the Ipod that also keeps the file names rather than the odd letter arrangements.. Its called Idump. Dodgy name but good software you can download it from HERE.
Tried that program before, the version I tried wouldn't recognise my ipod nano. Might work better on the version posted. Good suggestion though, as does what I suggested but in a simpler, less hassle way, also gives you the chance to pick and choose what you transfer

ps by using the 'Keep Itunes media folder organized' will rename the files back to proper names again

just make sure you disable the ituneshelper.exe and any other itunes related services from task manager first!
